Day Trips from Zanzibar's East Coast
Quick answer
Most of the island is a comfortable day’s outing from the quiet corner.
Day trips from Zanzibar’s east coast reach most of the island’s headline sights. From Michamvi Pingwe, Stone Town is about 1h15 by car, Jozani Forest and its red colobus monkeys 40 minutes to an hour, Kizimkazi’s dolphins about 40 minutes. Kuza Cave in Jambiani (USD 10 to swim) and Maalum Cave in Paje are easy half days, Prison Island is a boat ride from Stone Town, and a safari is a short flight. Checked 2 October 2026.
| Stone Town | ≈ 1h15 by road — UNESCO old town (2000) |
| Jozani Forest | ≈ 40 min to 1h — endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkeys |

The big one
Is Stone Town worth a day trip from the east coast?
Yes — it is the one trip almost everyone should make. Stone Town is about 1h15 by road from Michamvi, and its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Go with a private driver, start early, and give it the whole day: the Old Fort, Darajani Market for spices, the Slave Market Memorial and the Forodhani Gardens night market, where Freddie Mercury's birthplace is a short walk away. Our Stone Town guide has the route for one day.

Wildlife
Jozani Forest: where do you see the red colobus?
Jozani is Zanzibar’s only national park and the place to see the endemic, endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey — 40 minutes to an hour from Matlai, and easily combined with Stone Town. The forest is groundwater forest, mangroves, wetlands and coral-rag scrub. Guided walks with a ranger are mandatory — you cannot enter without one — and the fee is paid at the gate.

Jozani sits on the airport road, which is the practical reason it pairs so neatly with a Stone Town day or a departure: the monkeys cost you almost no extra driving. Most guests do the forest on the way back from town, in the early afternoon.
South
Kizimkazi: when should you see the dolphins?
Kizimkazi, about a 40-minute drive from Michamvi, is where you go for dolphins and one of the oldest mosques in East Africa. It is a separate trip rather than something off the Matlai beach, and we help you arrange it. Go early, and choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance rather than chasing the pods — our position on the record is early morning or not at all, because a fleet of boats chasing the pods disturbs the dolphins’ rest and sends guests home unhappy. The longer version, including Menai Bay, is in our dolphins guide. In the village, the Kizimkazi Dimbani Mosque carries a Kufic inscription dating its founding to 1107 CE, and the dolphin trip and mosque are often combined in one morning.
Off Stone Town
Prison Island (Changuu): is it worth it?
What do you see on Prison Island?
Prison Island, Changuu in Swahili, is a small island a short boat ride off Stone Town. The draw is a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, introduced to the island; the name promises a prison, but the island's story is mostly that of a quarantine station. The tortoises are not the ones you meet at Matlai: our own live in their enclosure behind the restaurant, and they are a different story.
How much does Prison Island cost, and how long does it take?
Plan half a day from Stone Town. You pay twice: the boat, agreed with the boatman at the Stone Town waterfront before you leave, and the island's entry fee on arrival. We found no official page that publishes either today, so ask the boatmen, or us, for the day's rate rather than trusting an old blog post.
Our honest verdict
A mixed bag. Families who love animals enjoy it; many other visitors find it a tourist trap for the cost and the time. With three days on the island we would skip it and spend the time on Stone Town or a reef morning; with a week, and if you combine it with a Nakupenda sandbank trip from the same waterfront, it earns its afternoon.
On the water
Which sandbanks can you visit near Stone Town?
On the Stone Town side of the island, a boat trip to the Nakupenda sandbank is the standout — a tidal bar of white sand in shallow, clear water, usually paired with a dhow trip. Worth knowing: Nakupenda is on the west side, near Stone Town, and is not the same as the Mchanga sandbank that appears directly in front of Matlai on the east coast. A Safari Blue dhow day through the Menai Bay conservation area’s sandbanks and reefs is the other option from that side of the island.

Half days
Caves near the south-east: Kuza and Maalum
Kuza Cave (Jambiani): can you swim there?
Yes — that is the point of it. Kuza Cave is a freshwater cave in Jambiani, the village south of Paje, run as a culture centre. On its own site, checked 2 October 2026: cave entry USD 10 for about 30 to 60 minutes, open from 8:30 to 18:30 every day, with a short history of the place and a Swahili house to see. Bring water shoes, a mask, a towel and an underwater torch, or hire them there. The centre also sells a full Swahili culture day with the cave, cooking and drumming for USD 75. Ask us for the drive on the day; it is a short one.
Maalum Cave (Paje): what is it like?
Maalum is a natural swimming pool inside a cave in Paje, about 20–30 minutes from Matlai. Its own site sells 90-minute slots inside the cave area, booked in advance, with towels, masks, changing rooms and a restaurant; it publishes no price, so ask when you book. It pairs with a Paje afternoon.
Cheetah’s Rock
Cheetah’s Rock is a wildlife rescue and conservation centre — home to cheetahs, white lions and bushbabies — that is not cheap but, by most accounts, worth it, and a particular hit with families.
Village tours
A private Makunduchi village tour on the south coast — about USD 90 for two people, including transport, a guide and water — runs three to four hours and is a genuine look at traditional fishing-village life. The spice farms belong in the same bracket: about an hour’s drive, three to four hours on site, genuinely educational and just as genuinely touristic.
Onward
Can you do a Tanzania safari from the beach?
Because Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, a safari is a short flight away rather than a separate holiday: Zanzibar to Arusha takes around 1 hour, depending on the airline and the aircraft, and from there the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire are a drive or a small plane. The classic combination is a week at Matlai plus a few nights on safari, in either order. We do not sell safaris ourselves; we recommend safari companies, and our Tanzania safari guide has the parks and the seasons.
In practice
How do you book, and what should you skip?
Almost none of this needs booking ahead. A one-day heads-up to your butler, usually a WhatsApp note, covers Jozani Forest, a spice-farm visit, snorkelling, the ngalawa sunset sail, deep-sea fishing and a Stone Town day. That flexibility counts for more on this stretch of coast than most, since it is the tide, not the clock, that decides which morning suits which outing — our activities guide rates the whole list. If you are still deciding where along the coast to base yourself, our east coast guide compares the villages.
And if time is short, prioritise. With three days on the island the advice we give is to skip the spice tour and Prison Island, keep Stone Town and one reef morning, and protect an empty day. One excursion a day is the maximum that leaves a holiday feeling like one.

Good to know
Questions travellers ask
The questions guests ask before they give up a beach day.
Is Prison Island worth visiting?
It depends. The Aldabra giant tortoises are the draw, and the boat ride out from Stone Town is pleasant, but many visitors find the whole package a tourist trap for what it costs. With three days on the island, we would skip it; with a week and a love of tortoises, go.
How much is Prison Island?
There are two costs: the boat from Stone Town, agreed with the boatman before you leave, and the island’s entry fee, paid on arrival. Neither is published on an official site we could check, so ask the boatmen at the Stone Town waterfront, or us, for the day’s rate before you go.
What is Kuza Cave and can you swim there?
Kuza Cave is a freshwater cave in Jambiani on the south-east coast, run as a culture centre. Yes, you swim in it: entry is USD 10 for about 30–60 minutes, open 8:30 to 18:30 every day, and water shoes, a mask, a towel and an underwater torch are recommended or can be hired there.
How far is Kuza Cave from Michamvi?
Kuza Cave is in Jambiani, the village south of Paje on the same coast, so it is a short drive rather than a day out. Ask us for the time on the day — the road and the car decide it — and pair it with Paje or Maalum Cave.
How far is Stone Town from Zanzibar’s east coast?
About 1h15 by car from Michamvi Pingwe. It is a full-day trip with a private driver, and because the airport sits about 5 km south of Zanzibar City, Stone Town also pairs well with an arrival or departure day.
What is Jozani Forest known for?
It is Zanzibar’s only national park and the place to see the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey. Guided walks with a ranger are mandatory, and the fee is paid at the gate.
Where can you see dolphins in Zanzibar?
Around Kizimkazi on the south-west coast, about a 40-minute drive from Michamvi. Go early and choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance. Our honest position is early morning or not at all — the boats that chase the pods are the ones we will not book.
Can you do a safari from Zanzibar?
Yes. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so you fly from Zanzibar to Arusha in around 1 hour, depending on the airline and the aircraft, then head into the Serengeti, Ngorongoro or Tarangire. We do not sell safaris; we recommend safari companies and help you time the flight.
