Dolphins in Zanzibar
Quick answer
Where do you see dolphins in Zanzibar?
The dolphin coast is the south and south-west of Unguja. Kizimkazi, on the south coast, is where most dolphin boats leave from, early in the morning, and the 2 species seen there are Indo-Pacific bottlenose and spinner dolphins. Menai Bay, reached from Fumba, is the quieter alternative. Go early, go small, and choose an operator who does not chase the animals.

Where
Where do you see dolphins in Zanzibar?
On the south and south-west of Unguja, the main island. Kizimkazi, a fishing village on the south coast, is where most dolphin boats leave from, early in the morning while the sea is calm. Indo-Pacific bottlenose and spinner dolphins are the two species seen there.
Menai Bay, on the south-west, reached from Fumba, is the quieter alternative, with fewer boats on the water. Tanzania's marine park authority lists dolphins among what visitors see in its marine parks too, but on Zanzibar the dolphin coast is the south. For whale sharks, the other big animal of these waters, see Mafia Island.

Choosing
Kizimkazi or Menai Bay?
Kizimkazi is the simpler choice for a morning: the boats leave early, the dolphins are often close to the coast, and you are back by late morning. Its weakness is popularity: on busy mornings several boats look for the same group, and that is where trips go wrong.
Menai Bay is the choice if you would rather share the water with fewer boats and make a longer day of it, often with snorkelling and a sandbank. Either way, the operator matters more than the place: ask how many guests it takes, how it approaches the dolphins, and what it does when other boats crowd in.

Ethics
How do you choose an ethical dolphin trip?
Choose the boat by how it behaves, not by the price. A good operator keeps a distance, approaches slowly from the side, never cuts across a group or drives into its path, and leaves when the dolphins move away. Small boats with few guests do this best.
Boats crowding the dolphins is the complaint we hear most often from guests who went with the wrong operator. If your boat starts chasing, say so; you are paying, and you can ask the skipper to stop. A morning with a distant sighting from a calm boat is a better trip than a close one from a scrum.
In the water
Should you swim with the dolphins?
Only on the dolphins' terms. If a group stays near a calm boat, a quiet swim can be possible; if the animals are moving or boats are crowding, stay on board. Never jump in on top of a group, and do not try to touch them. Watching from the boat is the trip; a swim is a bonus, not a promise.
Check the boat before you board: the UK government advises not to get on a boat that looks overloaded or not seaworthy, and to learn the emergency procedures on board. Ask for life jackets. For snorkelling on Zanzibar's reefs, see our snorkelling and diving guide.
The day
How do you plan the day from the south-east coast?
As an early start. The dolphin boats leave Kizimkazi early in the morning, so from Michamvi Pingwe you leave before breakfast and are back for a slow afternoon on the beach, when the tide allows a swim: the full swim off the beach is the 2–4 hours around high tide (the tides guide has the day). Your butler helps you organise the driver.
For more outings from the east coast, see day trips from the east coast; for further islands, Pemba and island hopping. Rooms at Matlai, on the beach at Michamvi Pingwe, start at USD 535 a night with half board.

Questions travellers ask
What guests ask us before they book a dolphin morning, and the honest answers.
Where do you see dolphins in Zanzibar?
On the south and south-west coast of Unguja. Most dolphin boats leave from Kizimkazi on the south coast in the early morning; Menai Bay, reached from Fumba, is the quieter alternative.
Which dolphins live there?
Indo-Pacific bottlenose and spinner dolphins are the two species seen off Kizimkazi. They are wild animals: some mornings bring a long encounter, some only a glimpse.
Is a dolphin trip ethical?
It can be, and it depends on the boat. Choose a small operator who keeps a distance, approaches slowly and does not chase or cut across the animals, and who leaves when the dolphins move off. Boats crowding the dolphins is the complaint we hear most often from guests.
Should we swim with the dolphins?
Only if the dolphins come to you and the operator works calmly. Never jump in on top of a group, and get back on board if the boats start to crowd. Watching from the boat is the trip; a swim is a bonus, not a promise.
Is the boat safe?
Judge it before you board. The UK government advises not to get on a boat that looks overloaded or not seaworthy, and to learn the emergency procedures on board; ask for life jackets.
Can we go from Michamvi Pingwe?
Yes, as an early start: the boats leave Kizimkazi early, so you leave the hotel before breakfast and are back for a slow afternoon on the beach. Your butler helps you organise the driver. Our day trips guide lists the other outings from the east coast.
