Stay at Matlai: Room or Whole Villa
Quick answer
Hotel comfort, villa privacy — or both.
Matlai works two ways: book a private room — 56 m² at Asili House, 80 m² suites at Kidosho — with full boutique-hotel service (more than 40 staff for six rooms), or reserve an entire villa for complete privacy. Both come with half board from two kitchens, butlers on WhatsApp, flexible mealtimes, and a beachfront where you swim off the sand around high water and in the sandbank channel at low tide.

The two modes
Should you book a room or the whole villa?
By the room is the classic stay: your own big room with terrace, the restaurant, the spa, and days shaped by nobody's schedule — breakfast until late morning, often served on your balcony; dinner timed to your snorkel trip, in the garden, the restaurant or the sand. Even fully booked, the multi-level 10,000 m² grounds keep a quiet corner free; many guests arrive with island itineraries and quietly abandon them for the kayaks, bicycles, the open-air cinema and the sandbank's twice-daily appearance.
By the villa turns the same machinery private: Kidosho's two suites for a honeymoon for just the two of you, Asili's four rooms for families and friends, or the full property for up to 18. The service ratio doesn't change — the audience does. Whichever door you choose, the constants hold: half board from Zatiny's two kitchens, the full included-services list, a butler one WhatsApp away, and a sandbank channel that keeps its water when the tide goes out.

House rules, plainly
The policies behind the flexibility
Check-in from 14:00 — in your room, drink in hand, no desk — and check-out by 10:30, with luggage minded and the beach still yours afterwards. Minimum stay is two nights, five in the festive season. Children join from 14 in individually booked rooms and at every age on villa buyouts; guest pets can't come (the resident two dogs, two cats and almost forty tortoises in their enclosure behind the restaurant are residents enough), and smoking lives outdoors.
The room fabric is consistent everywhere: king beds (Dunia converts to a true twin on its dhow-wood frame), both shower and bathtub in every bathroom, safes, minibars, Inaya Zanzibar toiletries and the Mwani welcome soap. WiFi is fiber-fed with battery-backed routers at 5 Mbps per voucher — honest and steady rather than theoretical — and payment takes Visa and Mastercard, no Amex, USD or shillings. Everything else flexes: that's the point of the house.

The deciding question
Ask yourselves one thing
When couples hesitate between the two modes, one question settles it: is this trip about the two of you, or about the place hosting you both? Room-stays keep the hotel's full theatre — the restaurant evenings, the spa's calendar, other travellers' stories at the beach bar. Villa-stays turn the volume down to your own voices. Neither is the upgrade; they're different holidays sharing one address — and switching between them on a future stay is exactly how our returning guests use the house.
Compare every room and price, season by season, before you choose between a room and a whole villa.
Good to know
Questions travellers ask
The flexibility most villa resorts can't offer: book by the room like a boutique hotel, or take the whole house. Here's how the two ways actually differ.
Room or whole villa — how do I decide?
Book a room if you want boutique-hotel life: full service, butler, restaurant, spa, and villa-grade privacy anyway (six rooms on 10,000 m² never feels shared). Book the villa when the trip is a unit — a honeymoon for just the two of you, family, group — and the pool, lounge and mealtimes should answer to nobody else.
How big are the rooms really?
Genuinely big: Asili House rooms run about 56 m², Villa Kidosho suites about 80 m² — each with ensuite bathroom, terrace or balcony, air-conditioning plus ceiling fan. 'Cozy' is not a word we need euphemistically.
What service level backs a room booking?
More than 40 staff care for six rooms — a ratio big resorts cannot print. Butlers are reachable through the day on WhatsApp, housekeeping runs daily with evening turndown, and meals flex around your plans: late breakfasts (often on your balcony), dinner early or late, tables in the garden, restaurant or sand.
What's included with any stay?
Half board from Zatiny's two kitchens, butler service, WiFi throughout, the 2 free kayaks, bicycles and games, beach shoes to borrow, and the beach in front with its lagoon and sandbank. Extras — spa, cinema, excursions, floating breakfast — price per use, quoted before you commit.
What makes the ocean here different?
Low tide here still means water: the channel between the beach and the Mchanga sandbank keeps a swim while the flat is out, and the sandbank surfaces for its twice-daily show. Guests arrive planning excursions and end up cancelling half of them.
Which villa fits which traveller?
Asili House (4 element rooms, palm-leaf roof, social lounge, oceanfront pool) suits couples who like character plus families and small groups. Kidosho (2 suites of ~80 m², Omani style, elevated infinity pool) is the privacy pick and the honeymoon default. Both face the same sunrise.
Can we split a stay between the two villas?
A lovely pattern for longer stays: Asili's sociable garden half first, Kidosho's infinity-pool finale after — or reversed for arrivals who need decompression first. The move takes minutes, the butler carries everything, and the two villas read like two hotels for the price of one packing cube.
