Private Villa Zanzibar for Groups
Quick answer
Space brings groups together.
Groups need what resorts ration: space that belongs to the group. Matlai's two villas configure from a friends' four in Kidosho, through a family of eight in Asili House, to the full property for up to 18 — two pools, one beach, flexible dining from one long table to lanterns in the sand, and no strangers anywhere in the picture.
| Group sizes | 4 → 18 guests |
| The units | Kidosho (4) · Asili (8) · all (18) |
| Two pools | One per villa |
| Dining | One long table — or five small ones |
| Fits | Friends · safari groups · retreats |

Why it works
Villa physics for groups
Large resorts split groups by design — different corridors, different sittings, loungers claimed at dawn. Villa living reverses the physics: the shared pool, lounge and garden pull the group together when it wants pulling, and private rooms absorb everyone's different clocks. Safari groups landing from the northern circuit feel it fastest — after lodge schedules, a house with no fixed times is the actual holiday.
The practical spine: six big rooms (56–80 m²), proper extra beds rather than fold-out apologies, butler service across both villas, and dining that reshapes nightly — barbecue, beach table, restaurant, or Duyên's Vietnamese beside Zatiny's fusion at one long garden table. Celebrations get the full stagecraft: buyouts host weddings and milestone birthdays, with the toast timed to the tide.
Who sleeps where?
| House | Rooms | Beds | Guests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa Kidosho | Jua, Mwezi | King-size beds; one extra bed per room | 4, or 6 with extra beds |
| Asili House | Hewa, Moto, Maji, Dunia | King-size beds; Dunia converts to twin; one extra bed per room | 8, or 12 with extra beds |
| Both villas | 6 | 12, or 18 with extra beds |
Every room takes one proper extra bed of 200 × 90 cm with mattress and mosquito net. For the whole property, 12 guests or 18 with extra beds, book the whole hotel: how exclusive use works and what it costs is on that page.
Group logistics
The mechanics that make group weeks easy
Beds first, because group trips live or die on them: every room takes a proper 90×200 cm extra mattress on a frame (Asili's sit neatly on the rooms' concrete benches; Kidosho's arrive as Swahili beds with mosquito nets), children's beds are on hand, and Dunia's dhow-wood frame splits into a genuine twin for the friends who love each other at a two-metre distance. Kitchens follow: a children's menu on request, dietary needs handled daily, and the day's tables reshaped on a WhatsApp message — one long garden table tonight, three small ones tomorrow, a barbecue by the pool for the reunion dinner. Ready to lock the dates? Book directly and the room plan comes back the same day.
The house absorbs group rhythms without friction. Two pools split the cannonball and quiet-swim factions; the open-air cinema (300 films) takes the teenagers and the grandparents' classics, with the last showing at 20:00; the lunchtime tortoise feeding handles the under-sixes indefinitely. Money stays simple — one master bill or split payments in Visa and Mastercard, no Amex, USD or shillings — check-in runs from 14:00, check-out to 10:30, and the two-night minimum (five in the festive season) keeps the calendar honest. Send the headcount and ages; the room plan comes back the same day.

Group occasions
What groups actually celebrate here
The bookings tell the story: fortieth birthdays that wanted a beach instead of a ballroom, safari parties decompressing after the northern circuit, three-generation reunions where the grandparents met the tortoises and the teenagers met the kayaks, small wellness circles claiming the spa's mornings, and the occasional working retreat that swore off slideshows by day two. The house holds one group at a time on buyouts — no strangers at the next table, no competing music.
Good to know
Questions travellers ask
Group travel dies by logistics and lives by space — these answers cover the numbers first, the atmosphere second, both honestly.
What group sizes work at Matlai?
Six king rooms hold 12 adults standard; with 90×200 cm extra beds, children's beds and Dunia's twin conversion, up to 18 configure comfortably. Friends' trips, safari groups, wellness circles and multi-generation families all fit the shape.
Do we need to rent the whole property?
Not always. A friends' four fits Kidosho; a family of eight takes Asili outright; only groups above eight — or groups that want zero strangers — need the full buyout. We'll recommend the honest minimum, not the maximum invoice.
How do groups eat here?
However the group wants: one long table in the garden, split tables at the restaurant, a barbecue by the pool, a lantern-lit dinner in the sand. Half board covers breakfast and dinner from both kitchens, meal times flex around game plans, and the kitchens handle mixed dietary needs daily.
What does a group actually do all day?
The lagoon runs the mornings — sandbank walks, kayaks, snorkel boats to Blue Lagoon — while the spa, the cinema (300 films) and two pools split the afternoons. Groups fresh from safari mostly do gloriously little; celebration groups book the beach dinner and let us stage the toast.
Why a villa instead of a resort block?
Resorts scatter a group across corridors and sittings; a villa reassembles it. Shared lounges and pools bring everyone together on purpose; private rooms let everyone retreat on schedule. No strangers at the next table, no negotiating loungers — the group sets the weather.
How do we enquire?
WhatsApp or email with dates, headcount and ages — we reply with a room layout, honest advice on villa versus buyout, and a direct quote. Weddings and festive-season groups should reach out 6–12 months ahead.
Can a group book activities together?
The whole list scales: ngalawa flotillas instead of one boat, the snorkel trip chartered outright, spa days block-booked, and the cinema turned over to your premiere. Group pricing follows group size — the butler quotes the package before anything confirms.
What about guests with mobility needs in a group?
Plan them into Kidosho or Asili's ground floor: Kidosho runs level from its entrance to the suites, and Maji or Dunia skip Asili's stairs. The paths between villas are garden terrain — tell us the specifics and we'll assign rooms so nobody's week depends on a staircase.
