Getting Around Zanzibar: Taxis, Drivers and Transfers

Quick answer

A small island that is never quite as quick as the map suggests.

Getting around Zanzibar is mostly a private car with a driver, arranged with your hotel's help. From the airport it is 1h15 to 1h30 to the quiet south-east coast, at USD 60 per car; from there Stone Town is about 1h15 and the north about 2 hours. Bolt operates on the island, local taxis agree a fare before setting off, and the dala-dala minibuses are cheap but slow. Checked 2 October 2026.

Arrival day

How do you get from the airport to your hotel?

Zanzibar is a small island, but it is not always a quick one — the roads are single-lane and unhurried, and the distance on the map rarely matches the time on the clock. Almost everyone gets around the same way: a private car with a driver, booked with the hotel's help. It is comfortable, it is traceable, and it means you are not negotiating fares at the roadside after a long-haul flight.

Plan on 1h15 to 1h30 from Zanzibar's airport to the south-east coast by private car — and treat any promise of 45 minutes with suspicion, because the road simply does not allow it. It is about 65 km south-east, through the Jozani Forest corridor rather than through Stone Town. We help you arrange a driver who meets you outside the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name and the hotel's. The car costs USD 60 for up to 6 people, paid to the driver's company, not to us: in cash to the driver, or by card on the company's own machine at the hotel. Our airport transfer guide walks through the route.

Taxis

Taxis in Zanzibar: how do they work and what do they cost?

There are no meters. A taxi on Zanzibar is a car with a driver and a price agreed before you set off, and the price is the only part worth settling in advance: say where you are going, whether the driver waits, and when you come back. For the airport run and for day trips, most guests take a driver arranged through the hotel, because the price is fixed and the driver is known. Only the airport transfer has a set price that we can quote; any other fare is a conversation with the driver, so ask us what is fair before you agree.

Are taxis in Zanzibar safe?

Yes, if you use one you can trace. The UK government's advice is to arrange taxis through a hotel or travel operator, to ask to see the driver's ID, and never to accept a lift from a stranger or from someone offering to find you a taxi. Germany's Foreign Office says the same in its own words: take only taxis whose driver you know, who was arranged by someone you know, or whose ride can be tracked. On the east coast that means the hotel's drivers or an app ride; in Stone Town, a driver booked from your hotel.

Is there Bolt or Uber in Zanzibar?

Bolt lists Zanzibar among its cities, with standard cars for up to four passengers, so an app ride is possible. We found no Uber service listed for Zanzibar. For a two-hour drive across the island, a driver arranged the day before is still the easier plan: you know who is coming and what it costs.

Day to day

Dala-dala and bajaji: should you use them?

The dala-dala minibuses run across the island and are very cheap; the bajaji, a three-wheeled tuk-tuk, and the boda-boda motorbike taxi fill the gaps in towns. They are part of island life and worth knowing about, but the UK government is blunt: these vehicles often have poor safety standards, are badly maintained and rarely have proper insurance, and accidents are frequent. Pickpockets work crowded buses and bus stations. Ride one once for the experience if you like, in daylight and with your bag in front of you; for anything that matters, take a car.

Can you rent a car or scooter in Zanzibar?

You can, and most guests decide against it. Traffic drives on the left. You need your own licence and an international driving permit, and on Zanzibar also a local Zanzibar driving permit, which the hire company arranges; carry copies of all of them. The UK government warns that road accidents are common, advises against driving outside towns at night and notes that hire cars vary in condition. Police checkpoints are frequent: a fine comes with a government control number for payment, never as cash on the spot. A hired scooter on these roads is the one thing our safety page is blunt about.

By sea

How do you take the ferry from Dar es Salaam?

Azam Marine runs daily fast ferries between Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Pemba and Tanga and sells tickets online and at its offices. Its rates page, checked 2 October 2026, lists for non-residents USD 35 per adult in economy, USD 40 in business, USD 60 in VIP and USD 100 in the royal class, with children's fares for ages 5 to 11; children under five cannot be booked. The page does not name the route, so confirm the fare for your crossing when you book. Buy at the official office or online, ignore the touts at the port, and, as the UK government advises after past ferry disasters on this route, do not board a boat that looks overloaded and find the life jackets when you get on.

Distances

How far apart are the coasts?

Distances on Zanzibar are best measured in hours, not kilometres. Michamvi Pingwe sits on the south-east coast; from there it is about 1h15 to Stone Town in the centre-west, and about 2 hours up to the north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa. Those northern beaches are the island's busiest strip — worth a day trip if you want to see them, but a different feeling from the quiet south-east. For most journeys you will be in the car for one to two hours, so it pays to group sights into full days rather than darting back and forth.

It also means there is no need to change hotels mid-trip to see Zanzibar. From one quiet base, Stone Town, the north and the south coast are all reachable as day trips; our day-trips guide covers what is worth the drive.

The mainland

How do you reach the mainland and the safari parks?

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, and the mainland is a short flight rather than a long haul. Zanzibar to Arusha, the usual gateway for a Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire safari, takes around 1 hour, depending on the airline and the aircraft. Dar es Salaam is a 20-minute hop with several flights a day on Coastal Aviation's timetable alone, and the same airline flies on to the Serengeti airstrips. Luggage limits on these small aircraft are real: Coastal's standard ticket allows 15 kg, and its XL seat 30 kg, which is exactly what the safari packing list is built around.

The classic combination is a week on the coast plus a few nights on safari, and it works in either direction. We usually suggest finishing on the coast — the gentler way to end a trip before a long flight home — and building in a buffer day, because small-aircraft schedules shift with the weather and you do not want a delay on the mainland eating into your international departure. We do not sell safaris; we can recommend safari companies and help you time the flight across.

Who drives

How do we help you arrange the driving?

Rather than leaving you to find transport, we help you set everything up in advance with local operators we trust. Our regular driver works with Semeni Tours and Safaris, run by Seif Haroub, who has handled Matlai's airport runs and day trips for years; for larger groups, the established agency ZanTours is an option. You step off the plane to a named driver holding a sign, and every onward trip — Stone Town, the north coast, or the airport for your safari flight — is set up before you arrive, with your butler holding the flight number so the driver waits when the flight does not cooperate. For the sights worth the drive, see our Stone Town guide; for the flights themselves, our flights page.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

What guests ask once the flights are booked and the island has to be crossed.

How much is a taxi from Zanzibar airport to the east coast?

To Michamvi Pingwe on the south-east coast a private car costs USD 60 per car for up to 6 people, paid to the driver's company, and the drive takes 1h15 to 1h30. Other taxi fares are not fixed or published: agree the price before you get in.

Is there Uber or Bolt in Zanzibar?

Bolt lists Zanzibar among its cities, with standard cars for up to four people. We found no Uber service listed for Zanzibar. Most visitors still use a pre-arranged driver for long drives, because a trip across the island is easier to plan than to hail.

Are taxis in Zanzibar safe?

Yes, if you use a taxi you can trace. The UK government advises arranging taxis through your hotel or a travel operator and asking to see the driver's ID; Germany's Foreign Office says to take only taxis whose driver you know or whose ride can be traced. Do not accept lifts from strangers.

Can I rent a car or scooter in Zanzibar?

Yes, but think twice. You need your licence plus an international driving permit, and a local Zanzibar driving permit, which the hire company arranges; traffic drives on the left. The UK warns that accidents are common and advises against driving outside towns at night; scooters and motorbike taxis have poor safety standards.

How do I get from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar?

By ferry or by air. Azam Marine runs daily fast ferries and publishes its fares on its own site; by air, Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam is a 20-minute hop on Coastal Aviation's timetable. Check the ferry for overloading and use the official ticket office, not touts.

How long is the drive from the airport to the south-east coast?

1h15 to 1h30 to Michamvi Pingwe, about 65 km south-east through the Jozani Forest corridor. Allow 1h15, not the 45–60 minutes sometimes quoted.

Can you fly within Tanzania from Zanzibar?

Yes. Zanzibar to Arusha, the usual gateway for the northern safari parks, takes around 1 hour, depending on the airline and the aircraft. Small safari planes allow 15 kg of luggage on a standard Coastal Aviation ticket, so pack soft bags.
