Michamvi vs Paje vs Jambiani vs Nungwi
Quick answer
Four areas, four different holidays.
Choose Nungwi for swimming at any hour and a lively evening, Paje for kitesurfing and a social scene, Jambiani for a calm village on a long beach, and Michamvi Pingwe for a quiet retreat with a sandbank at low tide. The big difference is the tide: it is small in the north and large on the east coast, where Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi are. Paje is about 20–25 minutes by car from Michamvi Pingwe and the north coast about 2 hours, so you can pair two of them. We run Boutique Hotel Matlai in Michamvi Pingwe, so read that column with our bias in mind.

How do Michamvi, Paje, Jambiani and Nungwi compare?
One table for the four. A dash means we have not checked that fact, and we do not describe what we have not checked. Nungwi stands for the north coast here; Kendwa, just south of it, is similar and has its own page.

Michamvi Pingwe
Is Michamvi Pingwe the right area for you?
For: the quiet. The peninsula is a fishing village with no nightlife, the beach has few people on it, and at low tide you swim the channel to the Mchanga sandbank, where the water stays. The Kae side faces west over Chwaka Bay for sunset, and The Rock restaurant is about 10 minutes away on foot along the beach. It suits couples, honeymoons, and a rest after a safari. Against: the tide. You swim straight off the sand only in the 2 to 4 hours around high tide, and the rest of the day is organised around the sandbank. There is no nightlife and no kite school at the door. It is 1h15–1h30 from the airport by road. Drift seaweed can come ashore from December to March on this coast, and we clean the beach every evening. Our Michamvi Pingwe guide has the detail.
Paje
Is Paje the right area for you?
For: everything that happens. Paje is where the kitesurfers are, where most of the schools sit, and where there are cafés, bars, banks, ATMs and a clinic within reach. The wide lagoon behind the reef is why people kite there. Against: it is never silent, the lagoon drains at low tide so the swimming is a matter of timing, and the neat underwater rows you see on the flats are seaweed farms, which are part of the village economy and part of the view. It is a young international crowd and the evenings carry music. It is about 20–25 minutes by car from us, and 60 to 75 minutes from the airport by private taxi. Our Paje guide and the kitesurfing guide go further.
Jambiani
Is Jambiani the right area for you?
For: long quiet walks and village life. Jambiani is the calmer village next door to Paje, with small hotels and guesthouses and a long beach, and it is the place we would send someone who wants the east coast without the bars. Kuza Cave, a freshwater cave you can swim in, is here. Against: it is tidal like the rest of the east coast, you see seaweed farms on the flats at low tide, and it is quieter than Paje in every sense, so evenings are short and dinner is where you are. We have not checked the airport drive to Jambiani, so we do not print one. Kitesurfing is mostly at Paje, to the north of it.
Nungwi
Is Nungwi the right area for you?
For: easy swimming and big skies. The tide on the north coast is small, so the sea stays at the beach and you can swim at any hour, which is why Nungwi and Kendwa dominate most rankings. Sunsets are over open water, and the evenings are the liveliest on the island. Against: the price of all that is bigger hotels, more people and more vendors on the beach, and less room to be alone than on any other coast. It is also not a kite spot in the Kusi, because the wind is offshore there. It is about 2 hours from Michamvi Pingwe. Kendwa is the quieter neighbour.
How to choose
Which one should you pick?
| If you want | Choose | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|
| Easy swimming and a lively evening | Nungwi | You want to be left alone |
| To kitesurf, or to eat out in different places | Paje | You want silence at night |
| A calm village on a long beach | Jambiani | You want nightlife or a kite school at the door |
| A quiet retreat, a sandbank, a honeymoon | Michamvi Pingwe | You want deep water at the beach all day |
Our own beach is Michamvi Pingwe, so the last row is the one we know best.
You do not have to choose one for the whole trip. A common split is most of the nights on the quiet south-east coast and two or three on the north coast at the end, with day trips between; the itineraries for 3 to 14 days show how. If you are choosing a hotel rather than an area, see the best hotels in Zanzibar, and for six areas in one table, where to stay in Zanzibar. This page is part of the Zanzibar travel guide.

Questions travellers ask
The questions we are asked most when someone is choosing between these four areas.
Which part of Zanzibar is best to stay in?
It depends on what you want from the evenings and the sea. The north (Nungwi, Kendwa) for easy swimming at any hour and a lively evening; Paje for kitesurfing and a social scene; Jambiani for a calm village on a long beach; Michamvi Pingwe for a quiet retreat with a sandbank at low tide. There is no best area, only a best match.
Should I stay in Paje or Michamvi?
Paje if you want to kitesurf, eat out in different places every night and have banks, ATMs and a clinic on the doorstep. Michamvi Pingwe if you want quiet evenings and a beach with few people. Paje is about 20–25 minutes by car from Michamvi Pingwe, so you can stay in one and visit the other.
Is Jambiani better than Paje?
Different, not better. Jambiani is the calmer village on the same coast, a long beach with village life and small hotels, while Paje is the kite hub with the bars and the young international crowd. Both are tidal, and both have seaweed farms on the flats at low tide.
Is Nungwi better than the east coast?
For swimming at any hour, yes: the tide on the north coast is small, so the sea stays at the beach. You pay for it with bigger hotels, more people and more vendors. The east coast is tidal, quieter and has the sandbanks and lagoons; it also has the sunrise rather than the sunset.
Which area has the best sunsets?
Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast, over open water. The east coast faces the sunrise. Near us, the Kae side of Michamvi looks west over Chwaka Bay, and the Kae Funk boardwalk is where people go for it.
Can I swim at low tide in Michamvi?
Yes, but not off the beach: at low tide you swim the channel to the Mchanga sandbank, where the water stays. You swim straight from the sand in the 2 to 4 hours around high tide. Every room has the tide table, and the tide comes about 50 minutes later each day.
How far apart are these areas?
Paje is about 20–25 minutes by car from Michamvi Pingwe. Michamvi Pingwe is 1h15–1h30 from the airport (about 65 km), and Paje is 60 to 75 minutes from it by private taxi. The north coast is about 2 hours from Michamvi Pingwe. We have not checked the drive from the airport to Jambiani or Nungwi, so we do not print it.
