Kendwa Beach, Zanzibar
Quick answer
Nungwi’s quieter neighbour, and the coast that ignores the tide.
Kendwa Beach is on Zanzibar’s north-west coast, next to Nungwi. Unlike the east coast, its small tidal swing leaves water at the beach, so you can swim at most hours. It faces west, so the sun sets into the sea, and it is known for the monthly Full Moon Party. From Michamvi on the south-east coast it is about 2 hours by car. Checked 2 October 2026.
| Location | North-west coast, next to Nungwi |

| Full Moon Party | Monthly on the beach; date moves with the moon |
| Sunset | West-facing — the sun sets into the ocean |
| Mnemba Atoll | Boat trips from the north coast |
| From Michamvi | About 2 hours by car |

The neighbours
Is Kendwa the best beach in Zanzibar?
It is one of the best for two things the east coast cannot do: swimming at almost any time of day without a tide chart, and a sunset that finishes in the water. Kendwa is Nungwi’s quieter neighbour on the north-west coast — wide white sand, a waterfront without working boats, and most meals at the hotels on the beach. Nungwi, close by on the same coastline, has the fishing harbour, more independent restaurants, more vendors and more energy; going from one to the other is a short tuk-tuk ride or a long beach walk. Whether Kendwa is the best beach depends on what you came for: if it is quiet, sandbanks and slow mornings, the south-east coast is the better answer.
Compared
Kendwa or the east coast?
The two coasts are complementary rather than interchangeable, which is why guests who combine them rarely regret it. The difference, side by side:
| Kendwa (north-west) | Michamvi Pingwe (south-east) | |
|---|---|---|
| Swimming at low tide | Yes, at most hours | In the channel by the sandbank; the lagoon empties |
| Sun | Sets into the sea (west-facing) | Rises out of the sea (east-facing) |
| Atmosphere | Lively; the Full Moon Party once a month | Quiet village, calm evenings |
| At low tide | Water stays at the beach | Sandbanks and tidal flats to walk |
| From Michamvi by car | about 2 hours | — |
| Suits best | Families with small children, short stays, sunset lovers | Couples, honeymoons, slow mornings |

The tide
Why can you swim at Kendwa at low tide?
The defining argument for Kendwa over the east coast — over Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi — is the tide. On the east coast the low tide pulls the water back hundreds of metres twice a day, leaving shallow flats and seagrass. At Kendwa and Nungwi the swing leaves water at the beach, and the sea is swimmable at most hours. That makes the north coast well suited to families with young children, who do not want to wait for the tide to return, and to short stays of three or four nights. One practical note for families: when the afternoon wind picks up, a pool is easier than chop with small children.
Once a month
When is the Full Moon Party at Kendwa?
Once a month, on the beach, on or around the night of the full moon. It is one of Zanzibar’s longest-running beach events and draws people from across the island, which is why beds in the area fill on party nights. The date shifts with the lunar calendar, so check it with the venue before you plan around it, and if the full moon falls on a weekend in high season, book early. Expect a relaxed, mixed international crowd and a late night.
Under water
Snorkelling, diving and the Mnemba Atoll
The north coast is the closer start for Mnemba Atoll, the island's best-known reef: boats leave from the north and north-east coast, and from Kendwa the morning is shorter than from the south-east. Expect green turtles, dolphins as a bonus but never a promise, and dense fish life; ask whether the marine park fee is included in the price, and whether the guide will be in the water with you. The reef directly off Kendwa beach is fine for a casual session from shore. Our guide to diving in Zanzibar compares Mnemba with the east-coast reefs and explains what certificate you need.
Evenings
Why are the sunsets better on the west coast?
Kendwa faces west, so the sun sets into the Indian Ocean in full view of the beach. The east coast — Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi — faces east: there the sunrise is the show, and in the evening the sun goes down behind the island. Stone Town has sunsets from its waterfront but no white beach to sit on; Kendwa and Nungwi have both.

Evenings at Kendwa are low-key outside party nights: sundowners on the beach, dinner at the hotels or a tuk-tuk to Nungwi for more choice, and small food stalls toward the village with chipsi mayai, grilled fish and ugali.
Logistics
How do you get to Kendwa, and when should you go?
From the airport or Stone Town, Kendwa is a drive north by private car or taxi; agree the fare before you set off, and see our getting-around guide for how taxis work. From Boutique Hotel Matlai on the south-east coast, the cross-island drive takes about two hours. It costs a travelling day but gives you both coasts — the south-east’s quiet and the north’s swimming and sunsets.
The best months are the same as for the rest of the island: the dry Kusi months from June to October, and the warm months from December to February. The long rains, from the end of March to May, bring overcast skies and heavy showers. In the Kusi months the south-east wind blows across the island, and the north-west coast sits in its lee, which often makes Kendwa the calmer side on a windy day. Month by month, our best-time guide has the rest.
Good to know
Questions travellers ask
The questions guests ask when they are weighing a few nights up north against a week in the south-east.
Is Kendwa the best beach in Zanzibar?
For swimming at almost any time of day and for sunsets over the sea, it is one of the best — that is what the north-west coast does that the east coast does not. For quiet, sandbanks and a slower rhythm, the south-east coast suits better. “Best” depends on which of those you came for.
What is the difference between Kendwa and Nungwi?
They sit close together on the same north-west coastline. Nungwi has a working fishing harbour, more restaurants, more vendors and more energy. Kendwa is quieter, with a wider sandy beach and fewer options outside the hotels. Day trips between the two are routine.
What is the Full Moon Party at Kendwa?
A monthly beach party on Kendwa beach, timed to the full moon, with a mixed international crowd from across the island. The date moves with the lunar calendar, so check it with the venue before you plan around it, and book a bed early if it falls on a weekend in high season.
Is Kendwa swimmable at low tide?
Yes — this is the north coast’s main advantage over the east coast. On the east coast the low tide empties the lagoon for hours; at Kendwa the tidal swing leaves water at the beach, so you can swim at most times of day. It makes the north coast practical for families with young children and for short stays.
How far is Kendwa from Michamvi?
About two hours by car across the island. It costs a travelling day, which is why guests who want both coasts usually split the stay — the south-east first, the north second, or the other way round — rather than day-tripping.
Is Kendwa good for a honeymoon?
Yes, with caveats. Kendwa does the sunset and the always-swimmable sea well; for quiet evenings and privacy, the south-east coast tends to suit couples better. A combination works: a few nights on the south-east coast, then a few in Kendwa for the sunsets.
