How Many Days in Zanzibar? Itineraries for 3 to 14 Days
Quick answer
Five to seven nights is the answer for most trips.
For most first trips to Zanzibar five to seven nights is the right length: a day in Stone Town, the rest on one beach, with a day trip or two. Three days is a stop after a safari, not a holiday. Ten and fourteen days work if you split the island between two coasts, or add Pemba, Mafia or the mainland. The plans below are for the island itself and start from Boutique Hotel Matlai on the south-east coast, 1h15–1h30 from the airport.
| Most first trips | 5 to 7 nights |
| A stop after a safari | 3 to 4 days |
| Stone Town | One day, or one night |
| Airport to our coast | 1h15–1h30 |
| Moving hotels | Costs half a day each time |
| Safari plus beach | See the safari itinerary |

Which itinerary fits how many days?
Read the row that matches your leave. Each plan is walked through below with the drive times and the tide in it. The first day and the last day are partial days, because flights land and leave at their own time, so a three-day trip holds two real days and a seven-day trip holds five.
| Length | Shape | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | One beach, no day trips, the sandbank and the spa | A stop before or after a safari |
| 5 days | One beach, Stone Town as a day trip, one boat trip | A short first visit |
| 7 days | One beach, Stone Town, caves and forest, a boat trip, an empty day | Most first trips, honeymoons |
| 10 days | Stone Town for a night, six nights on the south-east coast, two on the north coast | Two kinds of evening |
| 14 days | Three bases with day trips, or an island flight to Pemba or Mafia | Divers, slow travellers, big family trips |
Our own beach is on the south-east coast, so the plans use it as the base; the days work the same way from any quiet stretch of the east coast.
3 days
What can you do in 3 days in Zanzibar?
Not much, and that is the plan. The transfer from the airport to Michamvi Pingwe takes 1h15–1h30, so day one is an arrival and an evening on the beach. Day two is the whole stay: swim straight off the beach in the 2 to 4 hours around high tide, swim the channel to the Mchanga sandbank at low tide, book a treatment at Bustani Spa, which is open every day from 09:00 to 18:00, and walk along the beach to The Rock at low tide. Day three is a last swim and the drive back. If you want the old town, put it on the way: Stone Town is 1h15 from our coast and the airport is 15 to 20 minutes from it.
Three days works best after a safari, when you want the beach and nothing else. If you are flying from Europe for three days, we would say add two.
5 days
How do you spend 5 days in Zanzibar?
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, 1h15–1h30 to the south-east coast, a swim and dinner |
| 2 | The tide day: beach and sandbank, the spa, an evening on the terrace |
| 3 | Stone Town as a day trip: 1h15 each way, the old town in the morning, the Forodhani night market if you can stay |
| 4 | A boat trip to the Blue Lagoon and Starfish Beach (2 to 2.5 hours), then a late lunch, an easy afternoon |
| 5 | A last swim, the drive to the airport |
Four nights is the shortest stay in which the pace changes. The boat trip is run by the village captains, and the tide sets the time.
Day three is the long one. If the drive back after dark does not appeal, swap the night market for an earlier return, or spend your last night in Stone Town instead; the airport is 15 to 20 minutes from the old town, which makes for an easy departure day. The full list of trips, with who runs them and what they cost, is on the day trips guide, and the walk through the old town is on Stone Town in a day.
7 days
Is 7 days the right length for Zanzibar?
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, the transfer, a swim, dinner |
| 2 | Learn the tide: the beach at high water, the sandbank at low water |
| 3 | Stone Town as a day trip, or a night there if you would rather not drive back |
| 4 | Jozani Forest, about an hour away, for a ranger-led walk; or Paje, about 20–25 minutes from the hotel, for a cave swim and lunch |
| 5 | The Blue Lagoon and Starfish Beach by village boat (2 to 2.5 hours) |
| 6 | The empty day: pool, spa, a walk to The Rock, sunset at Kae Funk if you want the Chwaka Bay side |
| 7 | Last swim, the drive to the airport |
Drive times are the hotel's own. Kuza Cave in Jambiani and Maalum Cave in Paje are the two cave swims; the day trips guide has hours and who to book with.
Seven days is where the trip gets its shape. Most guests who book four nights wish they had booked seven. The empty day is the line we would defend: nothing is booked and the tide chooses the afternoon. It is also the length that suits a honeymoon, since there is room for a spa day for two and a dinner on the sand.
10 days
How do you split 10 days in Zanzibar?
Ten days is long enough for two coasts, and two coasts are the only reason to split. The south-east coast around Michamvi Pingwe is quiet, with a tidal beach and a sandbank; the north coast, about 2 hours away, has almost no tide, so the sea swims at any hour, and a livelier evening. The split we suggest:
| Nights | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Stone Town | The airport is 15 to 20 minutes away; you walk the old town on arrival, with a night market for dinner |
| 6 | South-east coast, Michamvi Pingwe | The seven-day plan above, minus Stone Town |
| 2 | North coast, Nungwi or Kendwa | Swimming at any tide, sunsets facing west |
Every move costs half a day. If that is too many bases, drop the north coast and take eight nights in the south-east.
If you only want one coast, stay there for the nine nights and add trips; just do not fill every day. For help choosing the coast, where to stay in Zanzibar compares six areas in one table, and the best hotels in Zanzibar page compares the hotels.
14 days
What can you do with 14 days in Zanzibar?
Fourteen days on the island alone is a lot of beach. It works for divers, slow travellers and a family with a villa, and it works best when you plan it as three bases rather than one: the ten-day split, with four or five more nights on the coast you liked best. The other way to use two weeks is to leave the island for part of it. The islands guide covers the flights to Pemba and Mafia, and a 14-day safari and Zanzibar trip is seven safari days and five beach nights; our safari and Zanzibar itinerary sets that out day by day, with the flight from Arusha.
Whatever you do with 14 days, keep one rule from the shorter plans: one empty day for every four days of trips.
The room bill
What does each length cost for the room?
At Matlai a room starts at US$535 a night with half board (the 2026 low-season rack rate), and the government adds an infrastructure tax of US$4 per person per night. The table multiplies that for two guests; other seasons and the villas are on rooms and rates.
| Stay | Room, half board, from | Infrastructure tax for two |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days, 2 nights | US$1,070 | US$16 |
| 5 days, 4 nights | US$2,140 | US$32 |
| 7 days, 6 nights | US$3,210 | US$48 |
| 10 days, 9 nights | US$4,815 | US$72 |
| 14 days, 13 nights | US$6,955 | US$104 |
Lowest-priced room in low season; high season and festive weeks cost more. Flights, lunches, drinks other than water, transfers and day trips are extra.
The best month for any of these plans depends on what you want from the sea: the best time to visit Zanzibar page sets all twelve side by side. For the road between the coasts, see taxis and getting around; for what half board covers in that room price, half board or all inclusive; and before you fly, visa and entry requirements. This page is part of the Plan your Zanzibar trip guide.

Questions travellers ask
The questions we are asked most when someone is deciding how long to stay.
How many days do you need in Zanzibar?
Five to seven nights is the right length for most first trips: one night or one day in Stone Town, the rest on one stretch of beach with a day trip or two. Three or four days is a stop, not a trip, and works best after a safari. Ten to fourteen days only make sense if you split the island between two coasts or add Pemba, Mafia or the mainland.
Is 3 days enough for Zanzibar?
For a stop, yes. The airport transfer to our coast is 1h15–1h30, so a three-day stay holds two real days, and the sensible plan is to stay on one beach and do nothing hard. If you want Stone Town as well, give it a day trip or add a night.
Is 7 days in Zanzibar too long?
No. Seven days is the length at which the pace changes: the first two days are arrival and tide-watching, the middle days hold the day trips, and the last two are for doing nothing. Most guests who book four nights wish they had booked seven.
How many days for Stone Town?
One full day is enough for the old town, the Old Fort, the markets and the Forodhani night food market. From Michamvi Pingwe it is 1h15 each way by car, so go early, or sleep one night in town at the start or end of the trip; the old town is 15 to 20 minutes from the airport.
Should I stay in one place or move around?
Stay in one place for up to a week, then add a second only if you want a different kind of evening. Every move costs half a day. A common split is the quiet south-east coast for most of the nights and two or three nights on the north coast, which is about 2 hours away, for swimming at any tide and a livelier sunset.
How many days for a safari and Zanzibar?
Between 10 and 14 days in total, with at least 3 to 5 nights on the beach. Our safari and Zanzibar itinerary has the 10, 12 and 14-day versions day by day.
How much does a week in Zanzibar cost?
At Matlai, a room starts at US$535 a night with half board in low season (2026 rack rate), so a week of six nights is from US$3,210 for the room, plus the government infrastructure tax of US$4 per person per night. Flights, lunches, drinks and day trips are extra. The table on this page shows the room cost for each length.
