Sunrise over the Indian Ocean in front of Matlai

A Day at Matlai: From Indian Ocean Sunrise to Dinner on the Beach

Boutique Hotel Matlai sits on the beach at Michamvi Pingwe, on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, and the day here is set by two clocks: the sun, which comes up out of the Indian Ocean directly in front of the villas, and the tide, which moves the sea out and back twice a day. This is what a typical day looks like — not a programme, because there is none, but the shape most guests' days take once the tide table has replaced the itinerary.

06:00

Sunrise over the sea, seen from above the palm trees and a swimming pool

Sunrise over the water

The east coast faces the sunrise, and it happens straight ahead: from the balcony or terrace of any of the six rooms the sun clears the horizon over the ocean at around six. It is the one appointment worth keeping every morning. Most guests watch it from bed with the doors open; the early ones walk the sand while the light is still gold. This is also the coast where you will not see the sun set over the water — for that, read on to 16:30.

08:00

Floating breakfast in the Villa Kidosho pool

Breakfast wherever you are

Meals follow your day, not a rota. Breakfast comes to your terrace, to the restaurant, or — ordered the evening before — floats out to you in the villa pool on a tray built for the job. The floating breakfast is your normal breakfast from our menu, served on a tray floating in the pool, and a charged extra on top of half board.

10:00

The Mchanga sandbank surfacing at low tide, from the air

The tide decides the morning

The tide here has a range of about one metre at neaps and three to four metres at springs and shifts about fifty minutes later each day. Your butler hands you a printed tide table at check-in, and the morning follows it.

At low tide the sea folds back across the reef flat and the swim to the Mchanga sandbank opens — five to ten minutes across the sand, then a short swim across the channel. On spring tides, around full and new moon, the flat is at its widest. Borrow reef shoes at the beach entrance; the butler shows you where to enter the channel and how the current runs that day.

At high tide the lagoon is the pool: swim off the beach, or take one of the two free kayaks out over the spot where the sandbank was two hours earlier. Unlike most of the east coast, the channel between the beach and the Mchanga sandbank keeps its water even at low tide — the tides guide explains the mechanics.

When you want to go further, the boats belong to captains from the village and the butler matches you to one:

  • Blue Lagoon — 15–20 minutes south by local boat, the nearest reef: coral heads and reef fish in calm, clear water, kindest on a morning trip.
  • Starfish Beach — 10–15 minutes north, a shallow sandy seabed scattered with large sea stars, best as the tide falls. Look and photograph, but leave them in the water — lifting a starfish out kills it.
  • Pingwe village — your butler can walk you through the village next door: fishermen pushing the ngalawas out, small shops worth supporting.
  • The Rock — the famous restaurant on its rock at the southern end of this beach is reached by boat at high tide; a drink, the photograph everyone takes, and the walk home along the sand once the water has gone.

12:30

A seafood platter at Zatiny

A light lunch, and the tortoises

Lunch is à la carte from midday at Zatiny, on the sand or in the garden: salads, the day's catch, a burger if the morning earned one, a Flying Matlai cocktail or a fruit smoothie. Lunchtime is also when the hotel's almost forty tortoises are fed in their enclosure behind the restaurant — walk round with your coffee; the zucchini brings most of them out.

15:00

A massage bed under lanterns at Bustani Spa

The quiet hours

The afternoon belongs to whoever wants nothing: a daybed by the pool, a lounger under the palms, a book. Bustani Spa works from the garden every day from nine to six — massages side by side for two on the pavilion's twin beds, or the herbal bath in the hand-carved wooden tub, best taken as the light starts to go. Late-afternoon slots go first; in high season ask the butler to book a day ahead.

16:30

A ngalawa under sail in the sunset off Michamvi

The sunset is on the other side

Matlai faces east, so the sun sets behind the land. The peninsula's west side, Michamvi Kae, faces Chwaka Bay — and that is where the sunset trip goes. Your butler arranges it with the village: a ngalawa, the fishermen's wooden outrigger canoe, sails you around the tip of the peninsula, or a local fibre boat makes the same trip faster. You watch the sun go down over the bay from the water and come back by taxi, about 15 minutes. Kae Funk, the bar at the end of the wooden boardwalk, is the alternative for a sundowner on foot, with about 10,000 TZS entrance at the door.

19:00

A candlelit dinner table set on the beach

Dinner on the sand

Dinner is served from 18:30, with last orders at 21:30, and it is the centre of the day. Zatiny is one restaurant with two kitchens — the Indian Ocean fusion menu and Duyên's Northern Vietnamese home cooking — and both menus, plus the daily three-course chef's menu, come to every table. Half board covers it for house guests.

The lobster is chosen live from the tank. The wine list runs wider than a six-room hotel needs. And the table itself can move: for a celebration, or for no reason at all, your butler sets one directly in the sand with lanterns and candles, one couple at a time — a charged extra, and the evening most guests write about afterwards.

21:30

The Villa Kidosho pool glowing in blue-hour light

Nightcap

A digestif or one of the island's rums at the bar, then the walk back through the garden. The rooms have air-conditioning and a ceiling fan, mosquito nets, and doors that open onto the sound of the tide. The open-air cinema is the other ending — around 300 films under the stars, booked through the butler and often paired with the beach dinner.

That is the shape of a day here. The parts you book — the floating breakfast, a boat, the spa, the dinner in the sand — are one WhatsApp message to your butler each; the rest belongs to the tide, and it never repeats exactly. If your week has a question the tide table does not answer, ask us before you fly.
