Michamvi Pingwe
The Rock Restaurant, Zanzibar: Tides, Booking and Hotels Near It
Quick answer
A restaurant on a rock: the tide decides how you arrive.
The Rock is a restaurant built on a coral outcrop just offshore at Michamvi Pingwe, on Zanzibar's south-east coast. The tide decides how you arrive: at low tide you walk across the sand to the entrance, and at high tide the restaurant boats you out. From Boutique Hotel Matlai it is about 10 minutes on foot along the beach. We do not print its prices or hours; ask the restaurant directly, and book for a time you have checked against the tide.

Where it is
Where is The Rock restaurant, and what is it?
The Rock stands on a coral outcrop a short way off the beach at Michamvi Pingwe, the east-facing village on the Michamvi peninsula. It is one of the best-known restaurants on this stretch of coast, and its setting is the reason: depending on the hour it is joined to the beach by sand or surrounded by sea. It is not a hotel and it is not run by us. We are its neighbours, and guests who want a meal out on an evening of half board walk there along the beach.
Two things make the setting work. The tide moves a long way on this coast, and the beach is long and open, so the walk can be over sand at one hour and a boat ride at another. Our tides and swimming guide explains the cycle.
Getting there
How do you get to The Rock at high tide and at low tide?
| The tide | How you arrive | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Low tide | On foot, across the sand to the entrance | From Matlai about 10 minutes along the beach |
| High tide | In the restaurant's boat | The outcrop is surrounded by water; the crossing is the memorable part |
| In between | Check the table for your hour | The tide comes about 50 minutes later each day, so the hour that worked yesterday does not work today |
From the hotel's own records. Opening times and prices are the restaurant's own.
If you are coming from the airport, you drive to Michamvi Pingwe first: about 65 km, 1h15–1h30 by private transfer, and the crossing starts at the beach. We give you the tide table for your dates, so you know in advance whether your evening will be a walk or a boat. The swimming window is the 2 to 4 hours around high tide.

Booking
Do you need to book The Rock, and what does it cost?
We would book. It is the restaurant everybody on the peninsula has heard of, and the tide gives a table a second constraint: a booking for a time when the crossing is difficult is a booking you may want to move. So ask for the hour first, check it against the tide table, then confirm. We do not take bookings for it, and we do not print its menu, prices or opening hours, because they are the restaurant's to set and they change. Ask it directly, and ask on the day if the weather is unsettled.
Half board at Matlai includes breakfast and a three-course dinner, so an evening at The Rock replaces that night's dinner at Zatiny; tell your butler the day before. A lunch there leaves the included dinner untouched.
Hotels near it
Which hotels are near The Rock restaurant?
We can speak for one, and we are biased: Boutique Hotel Matlai is about 10 minutes' walk along the beach from The Rock, with six rooms in two villas directly on the Pingwe beach, and the beach about 20 metres from every room. Small, family-owned hotels stand along the same beach, on the other side of the peninsula at Michamvi Kae too. We do not name them or measure their distance, and you should not take our word on it: ask each hotel for the walking time to The Rock and how it handles the tide.
What to ask a hotel near The Rock, in order of importance:
- Is the walk on sand, and at which tide? At high tide the beach in front of a hotel may be under water.
- What is the board? A half-board price includes dinner; an evening elsewhere is an extra meal.
- How many rooms are there? A small hotel gives you a kitchen you can talk to and a butler who knows your name.
- What is in front of the hotel? The sandbank, the channel, the open beach.

Nearby
What else is there to do around The Rock?
The same beach has the Mchanga sandbank at low tide, which you swim to through the channel, and the kayaks go out at high tide. For the sunset, go to the other side of the peninsula: Michamvi Kae faces west over Chwaka Bay, and the Kae Funk boardwalk is where people go for it (entrance 10,000 TZS at the door, a short taxi ride and a walk over a wooden bridge through the mangroves). The things to do in Michamvi page lists the rest, and the Michamvi Pingwe guide puts it all on one map. This page is part of the Zanzibar travel guide.

Questions travellers ask
The questions we are asked most about The Rock, answered with what we know first-hand.
Where is The Rock restaurant in Zanzibar?
It stands on a coral outcrop just offshore at Michamvi Pingwe, on the south-east coast of Zanzibar. At low tide the outcrop is joined to the beach by sand; at high tide it is surrounded by water.
How do you get to The Rock restaurant?
It depends on the tide. At low tide you walk across the sand to the entrance. At high tide the restaurant boats guests out to it. Either way you start from the beach at Michamvi Pingwe, so check the tide table for the time of your booking before you choose how to arrive.
Can you walk to The Rock at low tide?
Yes, and from Matlai it is about 10 minutes on foot along the beach. At high tide the same walk ends at water, and the restaurant's own boat takes you across.
Do you need to book The Rock restaurant?
We would. It is one of the best-known restaurants on the island, and the tide decides when the crossing is easy, so a table booked in advance for a time you have checked against the tide saves a wasted trip. Ask the restaurant directly for its booking arrangements; we do not take bookings for it.
How much does The Rock cost, and when is it open?
We do not print prices or opening hours for The Rock, because they are the restaurant's to set and to change, and a number copied here would go out of date. Ask it directly on the day you plan to go.
Which hotels are near The Rock restaurant?
We can speak for one: Boutique Hotel Matlai, 10 minutes on foot along the beach, with six rooms and the beach about 20 metres from every room. Other small hotels stand along the same beach at Michamvi Pingwe; check each hotel's own website for its distance, because we have not measured them.
Is The Rock worth it if I am staying at Matlai?
For one evening or one lunch, yes: it is a walk away and the crossing at high tide is the part guests remember. Half board at Matlai includes breakfast and a three-course dinner, so an evening at The Rock means skipping that night's dinner at Zatiny; tell your butler beforehand.
