The peninsula
What kind of places are there on the peninsula?
Michamvi Pingwe is a beach of small hotels: family-owned houses and boutique hotels along a quiet stretch of coast. That shapes the stay as much as any single hotel does. Evenings are quiet, the village has no nightlife, and the beach in front of each hotel is public, as every beach in Zanzibar is.
Whichever place you look at, check five things: whether it sits directly on the beach; where it lies relative to the sandbank channel, which keeps its water at low tide; what the rate includes (half board here is breakfast and dinner); whether children are accepted in the rooms or only with a whole house; and whether the hotel helps with the airport transfer.

Room or villa
Should you book a room or a whole villa?
Matlai has six rooms in two villas, and you can book a single room or a whole villa. Which villa suits you is mostly a matter of the design you like.
Which villa suits a couple?
Asili House is the African-style villa: four rooms, already very spacious, around an elevated pool above the beach. Villa Kidosho is the Omani-style villa, in the manner of Stone Town: two suites, bigger and a little more expensive, with an infinity pool. Couples who want the most privacy book the whole of Villa Kidosho.
Which suits a family or a group?
Families and groups take a whole villa: Asili House sleeps up to 8, Villa Kidosho up to 4. Children under 14 stay only with a whole villa, and bookings with children are made by enquiry. One extra bed per room is possible at 25% of the room rate, cots can be arranged, and the pools are unfenced, so small children need watching.

Booking
How far ahead should you book?
As soon as your dates are fixed. The minimum stay is 2 nights, and 5 nights in the festive season around Christmas and New Year. A 25% deposit, which is not refunded, confirms the booking, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. Cancelling with less than 2 months' notice costs 50% of the stay, with less than 1 month 100%. For the arrival, the airport transfer guide explains the drive.
The base
Is Michamvi the right base for your trip?
It is if you want a quiet beach, a swim at low tide in the sandbank channel and evenings without music. It is not if you want nightlife on your doorstep: Paje, a short drive south, has that. The Michamvi or Paje page compares the two, the tides guide explains how the beach works, and where to stay in Zanzibar looks at the whole island.
Good to know
Questions travellers ask
The questions guests ask before they choose where to sleep on the peninsula.
What kind of accommodation does Michamvi Pingwe have?
The beach is lined with small, family-owned and boutique hotels, which is why the stretch feels calm. Prices, styles and board basis vary a lot, so compare what is included as well as the nightly rate.
Should I book a room or a whole villa?
A room suits a couple or two friends. A whole villa suits a family or a group, and it is the only way to stay with children under 14: Asili House takes up to 8 guests in four rooms, Villa Kidosho up to 4 in two suites, each with its own pool.
How far in advance should I book in Michamvi?
As early as your dates are fixed, especially for the festive season, which has a 5-night minimum. A 25% deposit confirms the booking and the balance is due 30 days before arrival.
Is Michamvi better than Paje or Jambiani?
For a quiet stay with a swim at low tide in the sandbank channel, Michamvi; for kite schools and nightlife, Paje. Our Michamvi or Paje comparison sets them side by side, and where to stay in Zanzibar compares every coast.
What does a stay in Michamvi cost?
At Matlai a room starts at USD 535 a night with half board in low season (2026 rack rate); a whole villa from USD 1,240 (Villa Kidosho) or USD 2,050 (Asili House). Add the government infrastructure tax of USD 4 per person per night and the airport transfer, USD 60 per car.
Can children stay?
Yes, with a whole villa: children under 14 stay only when the family books the whole of Asili House or Villa Kidosho, and bookings with children are made by enquiry rather than online. Cots can be arranged, and the pools are unfenced, so small children need to be supervised.
How does booking and cancellation work?
A 25% non-refundable deposit secures the booking, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. If you cancel with less than one month’s notice, 100% of the total is charged; with less than two months’ notice, 50%. The full terms are on the booking policies page.
