Serengeti vs Masai Mara
Quick answer
Serengeti or Masai Mara: which is better?
They are one ecosystem split by a border, so "better" depends on the month. The Serengeti in Tanzania covers 14,763 km², about half of the 30,000 km² Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, and holds the herds for most of the year, including the calving season from January to March. The Masai Mara in Kenya sees the Mara River crossings, which TANAPA gives as August to October there. If you are coming on to Zanzibar, the Serengeti is the simpler half.
| One ecosystem | About 30,000 km² across Tanzania and Kenya |
| Serengeti | 14,763 km², Tanzania (TANAPA) |
| Calving | January–March, southern Serengeti (Tanzania) |
| Mara crossings | August–September in the north; August–October on the Kenyan side |
| Serengeti entry | TZS 178,850 per adult per day, excl. VAT |
| Then Zanzibar | 5–9 nights on the beach |

One ecosystem
Which is bigger, and does it matter?
The Serengeti and the Masai Mara are two parts of one landscape. TANAPA describes the Serengeti National Park, 14,763 km², as the heart of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, about 30,000 km² across Tanzania and Kenya; the Masai Mara National Reserve is the Kenyan part, on the other side of the border.
Size matters for one reason: time. On TANAPA's calendar the herds are on the Tanzanian side from December to July, cross into the north in August and September, and return through the northern Serengeti in October and November. The Mara has its weeks; the Serengeti has most of the year.
The crossings
Where are the river crossings in each month?
TANAPA's own calendar for the migration puts the crossings and the calving side by side:
| Serengeti (Tanzania) | Masai Mara (Kenya) | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 14,763 km² | The Kenyan part of the same ecosystem |
| Calving season | January to March, southern plains | No; the herds calve in Tanzania |
| River crossings | Grumeti: June–July (west); Mara: August–September (north) | Mara River: August to October |
| Return of the herds | October–November, northern Serengeti | The herds move back into Tanzania |
| Entry fee, adult | TZS 178,850 per day, excl. VAT (TANAPA) | Not checked today; ask your operator |
| Onward to Zanzibar | Coastal Aviation, same day via Arusha | Via Nairobi or Mombasa (Safarilink code-shares) |

Calving
Which is better in the calving season?
The Serengeti, without question: from January to March the herds are on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and that is where the calves are born. The NCAA gives December to April for the herds at Ndutu, which you can combine with the Ngorongoro Crater.
In these months the Masai Mara still has its resident wildlife, but not the migration herds.

Money
Which costs more?
We can only compare what we could check. TANAPA's own tariff gives the Serengeti entrance as TZS 178,850 per non-resident adult per day before VAT, in the season valid to 14 March 2027, plus a concession fee per night if you sleep inside the park. We could not open and check an official page for the Masai Mara's fees today, so we print none.
Fees are only part of the bill: vehicles, guides, camps and flights decide most of it. Ask two or three companies for the same route on both sides, in the same currency. Our safari costs page lists the Tanzanian fees park by park.
Combining
Can you combine the two, and the beach?
You can, but it adds a border and more flights. Coastal Aviation's timetable lists Safarilink code-share flights from Arusha to Nairobi Wilson, and from Mombasa to Zanzibar; from the Serengeti airstrips, Coastal flies to Zanzibar via Arusha the same day.
For most of our guests, a Tanzanian safari timed to the right month, followed by the beach, is the simpler plan. Our page on Zanzibar after safari covers how many nights to plan on the coast.

Questions travellers ask
The two names describe one landscape. These are the questions that decide which side to visit.
Is the Serengeti or the Masai Mara better?
It depends on the month. The herds spend most of the year in Tanzania, including the calving season in the south from January to March; the Masai Mara is at its most dramatic during the Mara River crossings, which TANAPA gives as August to October on the Kenyan side. For a trip that ends on Zanzibar, the Serengeti side is simpler.
Which is bigger?
The Serengeti National Park covers 14,763 km², about half of the 30,000 km² ecosystem TANAPA describes across both countries; the Masai Mara is the Kenyan part. Size matters because the herds spend more of the year on the Tanzanian side.
When are the river crossings?
According to TANAPA, the Grumeti River crossings are in the western Serengeti in June and July, and the Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti in August and September, with August to October given for the crossings on the Kenyan side.
Where is the migration in the calving season?
In Tanzania: from January to March the herds are on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where they give birth. The NCAA gives December to April for the herds at Ndutu.
Which costs more?
For the Serengeti we can quote TANAPA's own tariff: TZS 178,850 per non-resident adult per day, before VAT. We could not check the Masai Mara's current fees on an official page today, so ask your safari company for both sides in the same currency before you compare.
Can I combine both with Zanzibar?
Yes, with planning. From the Serengeti, Coastal Aviation flies to Zanzibar via Arusha the same day. From Kenya, its timetable lists Safarilink code-share flights from Arusha to Nairobi Wilson and from Mombasa to Zanzibar. A single-country safari in Tanzania keeps the logistics simplest.
