Birthday Celebrations in Zanzibar | Boutique Hotel Matlai East Coast

The east coast of Zanzibar faces the Indian Ocean. When the sun rises over the water at Michamvi Pingwe — all colour and stillness before the world catches up — it is difficult to think of a better place to mark something that matters. Boutique Hotel Matlai sits here, at the end of a quiet peninsula on Zanzibar's southeastern coast: six rooms, direct beach access, a lush tropical garden, and a team that takes particular care of guests who arrive with something to celebrate.

Where you will stay

Most guests who come to Matlai for a birthday or anniversary book a single room or suite — and that is exactly how most milestone stays here work.

A suite in Villa Kidosho

Villa Kidosho is a freestanding 240 m² villa set deep in its own garden. It has two suites: Jua — the sun — and Mwezi — the moon. Each suite has its own private terrace with sun loungers, a swing bed, a separate lying area, and a dedicated pool shower. The pool sits at a higher level than the rooms; the balconies are set back into the garden. Even when both suites are occupied, guests rarely see each other — that is how the villa is designed.

The style is Arabic-Swahili — close in spirit to Stone Town, Zanzibar's historic capital, with its layered stonework and centuries of cultural influence. A single suite here feels like a place of its own.

If you would like the entire villa — both suites, the pool, the garden, exclusively yours — that is also possible. A full buyout comes at a preferential rate. Email us and we will send you the details.

A room in Asili House

Asili House has four rooms (Moto, Maji, Dunia, Hewa), each opening onto its own balcony with sun loungers and a view of the garden. The style here is African — warm wood, natural materials, a real closeness to the landscape. It is more house than villa, and guests who stay here often say the surroundings feel like a different kind of immersion. Surrounded by a lush tropical garden, each room has its own sheltered space and a strong sense of privacy.

Most guests choose between the two villas by design rather than by size: Asili House for the African feel, Villa Kidosho for the Arabic-Swahili character. Both are the right choice — just for different people.

The celebration

Let the butler know what you are marking — before you arrive or on the morning of the day — and we will work with you on the details.

We arrange birthday cakes, flower petals, candles, and written cards on request. Simple touches we often handle as part of the stay; more involved arrangements are done at a small additional cost. We have helped with everything from milestone birthdays to marriage proposals. The answer to most thoughtful requests is yes.

Private candlelight dinner

This is what most guests remember. We set a table at the beach entrance — on the sand, within our property — and dress it with palm leaves, bougainvillea flowers, and kerosene lamps. The result looks entirely designed for the occasion, because on that evening it is. You dine from Zatiny's full kitchen, which includes the daily chef's menu and Kim's Vietnamese kitchen, Duyen — either, or both, at the same table. Let the butler know in the morning, and everything will be ready for the evening.

Morning: the floating breakfast

Order the evening before. At sunrise, we float a tray in the pool — laden with your full breakfast — while you enjoy the water. The east coast faces east; the light on the Indian Ocean at that hour is a particular reward for choosing this side of the island. Available to all in-house guests during breakfast hours, on request the day before. It is especially good on the morning after a birthday dinner.

The Bustani Spa

The garden spa is open to all guests — no appointment needed, though one helps. Two massage beds side by side make it a natural couples experience. If you prefer to stay in your villa or on your balcony, the spa team brings a portable bed to you. Massages, facials, and body treatments are available throughout the day.

The day

The sandbank — Mchanga — appears directly in front of the hotel at low tide. Kayak over or swim the short channel; the butler will walk you through the timings. Mchanga is a well-known spot on this part of the coast, and the fact that it sits right in front of Matlai makes it the most naturally accessible sandbank on the east coast. Drinks can be arranged to meet you there via a village boat, on request and at village rates.

In the late afternoon, we organise an ingalawa trip. The ingalawa is the traditional outrigger canoe that the fishermen of Michamvi Pingwe use — it is the right vessel for watching the sun leave the sky from the water. We arrange the boat; you bring whatever you like to drink — champagne, beer, coconuts, something cold — in a cool box, charged to your room. The trip takes you across toward Chwaka Bay as the colours change. It is an hour or so that stays with people.

For deep-sea fishing, Beach Bums Fishing Charters are based directly on our beach. Book with them directly, or ask the butler for the contact.

In the evening

When dinner on the sand gives way to a clear night sky, the butler can arrange a private open-air cinema on the property. Or simply: drinks on the terrace, the sound of the ocean, the quiet the east coast keeps after dark.

A note on Stone Town

Stone Town — Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed historic capital — is approximately 90 minutes from Michamvi Pingwe by road. If you would like to include it, it works best either at the very start of your trip before arriving on the east coast, or on your departure day on the way back to the airport. For a birthday stay of two or three nights, our honest recommendation is to base yourself here. What makes Matlai the right setting for a milestone is what happens at the property.

Before you arrive

Email us. Tell us what you are celebrating, the dates, and anything you have in mind. We will tell you what we can arrange — and it is usually more than guests expect.
