Best Time to Visit Michamvi Pingwe
Quick answer
When is the best time to visit Michamvi Pingwe?
It depends on the sea you want. The Kusi, the south-east monsoon, brings the dry, breezy months, from about May or June to October; the Kaskazi, from about November to March, is warmer, more humid and stiller. April and May are the long rains, and the hotel closes for part of that time. On this shore the tide shapes each day more than the month does. For the whole island, see the best time to visit Zanzibar.

The seasons
Which months suit this shore, and why?
Two monsoon winds divide the year on Zanzibar's east coast, and the people of Michamvi plan by them. Neither is "better"; they make two different holidays.
What does the dry-season Kusi wind do here?
The Kusi blows from the south-east from about May to October. It brings the dry season: lower humidity, cooler evenings, and the clearest water of the year for snorkelling and diving. The pools are refreshing rather than warm in these months, at around 25 °C. At the height of the Kusi, in July and August, the sea is rougher, and a boat trip sometimes moves to another day.
What is it like in the Kaskazi months?
The Kaskazi blows from the north-east from about November to March or April. The air is warmer and more humid, there is more rain, the pools are warmer, and the sea is generally calmer; these are also the months for the big game fish offshore. Seaweed is somewhat more likely on the beach from December to March, though some years bring very little.
Which months should you avoid, and is the hotel open?
April and May are the long rains, and the hotel closes for part of that time; write to us for this year's dates. The UK government describes Tanzania's rainy seasons as generally running from the end of March to May and from October to mid-December, with lengths that vary from year to year.
The tide
How does the tide change a day here, whatever the month?
In every season the tide sets the rhythm. This is an open stretch of coast: at low tide the sea goes out, but the channel towards the Mchanga sandbank keeps its water, and the full swim off the beach is the 2 to 4 hours around high tide. The tide comes about 50 minutes later each day, so a high-tide morning on arrival becomes a low-tide morning a few days later.
Around full and new moon the spring tides go furthest out and come highest in; at the quarter moons the neap tides are gentler. Every room has a tide table, and the tides and swimming guide explains the cycle in detail.

Seaweed
When is there seaweed on this beach?
Seaweed comes over the reef on the highest tides, the spring tides around full and new moon. It is somewhat more common from December to March, when the Kaskazi pushes floating seaweed towards the east coast, but it is unpredictable. Because Michamvi Pingwe is an open coast rather than a bay, the tide usually carries it back out within a few days; staff clean the beach every evening, and swimming is always possible.
The neat rows you see in the shallows at low tide are something else: seaweed farms, worked by women from the village. Our seaweed and tide calendar shows the spring tides month by month.
Through the year
What are the wind and the water like through the year?
The table puts the seasons side by side. The current sea temperature, read by NOAA satellite off our coast, is in the tide panel below.
| Season | Months (about) | Wind | What it means on this shore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kusi | May or June to October | South-east monsoon | Dry, breezy, cooler evenings; clearest water; rougher sea for boats in July and August |
| Kaskazi | November to March | North-east monsoon | Warmer and humid, more rain, calmer sea; seaweed more likely from December |
| Long rains | End of March to May | Changing | The heaviest rain; the hotel closes for part of April and May |
| Short rains | October to mid-December | Changing | Showers; the length varies from year to year |

Planning
When should you book, and for which month?
Book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for Christmas and New Year, when the festive season has a 5-night minimum stay. Rates change with the low, high and festive seasons; the dates and prices are on rooms and rates. Whichever month you choose, ask us for the tide table for your dates before you plan boat trips, and look at things to do in Michamvi Pingwe to see what each tide is good for.

The tide clock
The moon runs the water here
Spring tides follow the full and new moon — the sea walks out to the sandbank and the swings are the widest of the month. Neap tides, at the quarters, keep the steadiest water.
Exact water hours shift day by day along this coast — send your dates and we read the tide for you.
The sea is 27.0 °C — NOAA satellite reading, October 6, from a grid point 2.4 km offshore.

Questions travellers ask
The season picks the backdrop; the tide picks your day. If your dates are fixed, ask us and we will tell you what to expect.
What is the best month to visit Michamvi Pingwe?
We would rather not name one month for everybody. The Kusi months, about June to October, suit people who like fresh, dry air and clear water; the Kaskazi months, about November to March, suit people who like heat and still evenings. April and May are the long rains, and the hotel closes for part of them.
Is the rainy season bad in Michamvi?
The UK government describes two rainy seasons in Tanzania, generally from the end of March to May and from October to mid-December, and notes that their length varies and that heavy rain and strong winds can affect travel. The long rains are the heavier ones; the hotel closes for part of April and May.
How warm is the sea at Michamvi?
Warm enough to swim in every month. Rather than quote a range, this page shows the current sea temperature off our coast, read by NOAA satellite, in the tide panel further down.
When is there seaweed on Michamvi beach?
Seaweed comes over the reef on the highest spring tides, around full and new moon, and it is somewhat more common from December to March, but some years those months pass with very little. Because this is an open coast, the tide usually carries it out again within a few days, and staff clean the beach every evening.
Does the tide matter more than the season?
For your day, yes. In every month you swim off the beach in the 2 to 4 hours around high tide and walk to the sandbank at low tide, and the tide comes about 50 minutes later each day. The tides guide explains how it works.
When should honeymooners come to Michamvi?
Whenever suits you best outside the long rains: couples who like a breeze come in the Kusi months, couples who like warm, still evenings in the Kaskazi months. Around Christmas and New Year the festive season has a five-night minimum stay.
How does booking and cancellation work?
A 25% non-refundable deposit secures the booking, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. If you cancel with less than one month’s notice, 100% of the total is charged; with less than two months’ notice, 50%. The full terms are on the booking policies page.
