Stay After Sauti za Busara: Quiet Beach Days on the South-East Coast
Quick answer
Three days of music in town, then the quiet side of the island.
Sauti za Busara runs from 19 to 21 March 2027 in Stone Town, and Matlai in Michamvi Pingwe is 1h15 to 1h30 by road from town. March is where the wetter season starts, so expect quiet beaches rather than guaranteed sun. Rooms and whole villas are half board, the minimum stay is 2 nights, and the last bookable night is 14 April 2027.

Why after
Why stay on the coast after the festival, not before it?
Because the festival is the loud part of the trip, and the coast is where the quiet is. Our view is that the order matters for one reason: after the last night you have nothing left to be on time for. Mornings here start with the sea in front of you and no plan, and that is a good way to let three festival days settle.
The honest downside is the drive. Staying in town before the festival keeps you within reach of the stages, whereas the south-east coast adds 1h15 to 1h30 each way. If you must be in town on the Friday morning, sleep in Stone Town first and come to us afterwards. Our Stone Town guide covers the town itself, and the Sauti za Busara guide covers the festival.
The festival
What we know about Sauti za Busara in March 2027
The organiser announced Friday 19 to Sunday 21 March 2027, three days, in Stone Town. The dates were first set for 11 to 14 March and were moved, in the organiser's words, in consideration of the holy month of Ramadan and the Eid celebrations. Music In Africa reported the change, and the festival's own site is busaramusic.org.
We are a hotel on the south-east coast, not the organiser. We do not know the line-up, the ticket prices or the venue for 2027, and we will not guess them: the organiser has not named a venue that we can cite, and the festival has changed its venue before. Read the programme on the organiser's site, choose your evenings, and then plan the days after. Ramadan and Eid also shape the weeks before the festival; Ramadan on Zanzibar's east coast explains what that means for a visit.
The drive
How long is the drive from Stone Town to Michamvi Pingwe?
Allow 1h15 by road, and up to 1h30. That is the same time as the airport run. Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is at 10:30.
Our advice is not to drive straight after the last act of a late night. Sleep in town on the final night, or the one before, and come across the next morning. If you arrive before 14:00, tell us your time and we will say what is possible; do not count on the room being ready earlier.
We help to organise the car, but the hotel does not run its own taxis, because Tanzanian law does not allow it. Two local partner agencies drive, and the butler team arranges it when you ask, or you can write to [email protected] before you travel with the date, the pick-up address and the number of guests. Our airport transfer guide shows how the same road works from the airport.

How many nights
How many nights should you stay after the festival?
The shortest stay we take is 2 nights, and that is the only fixed number. We do not have a recommended length, because the right one depends on your flight home and not on a rule of ours.
Count in days. 2 nights give you one whole day between the drive in and the drive out, and each extra night adds another whole day. Start from your flight, subtract the 1h15 to 1h30 drive to the airport, and put what remains on the beach. A tide-led day, such as the sandbank swim below, wants a spare day because the water moves about 50 minutes later every day.
The window has an end. The festival finishes on Sunday 21 March 2027 and the last night you can book is 14 April 2027, because the hotel then closes until 22 May 2027. Any stay that crosses that date cannot be booked.
March weather
What is March like on the south-east coast?
Quiet, warm and showery, and we would rather say that than promise sun. Low season starts on 1 March 2027, so the beaches are calmer. The wetter season also starts to build: at the Zanzibar weather station March averages 177 mm of rain on 11 days with 1 mm or more, against 51 mm in February, and in 30 years no March was dry.
Days reach about 32.5°C, nights stay near 24.5°C and the sea off Michamvi Pingwe averages 29.4°C, the warmest month of the record. The station is at the airport on the west side of the island, so these are island figures and not a reading taken on our beach. Tropical rain tends to come as a burst and clear, so plan on a shower roughly every third day and keep one day free. Our Zanzibar in March guide has the full table and its sources.
The tide
What do the tides do in the days after the festival?
The sea here follows the moon. Spring tides come with the full and the new moon, when the water draws back furthest and the swings are widest. The full moon falls around 22 March 2027, the day after the festival ends, so your first beach days sit near a spring tide. That date is our own astronomical calculation and not a tide table.
In practice you swim straight off the beach in the two to four hours around high tide. At low tide the Mchanga sandbank appears in front of the hotel, and you reach it by swimming the short channel, never on foot; the kayaks are free for guests and are the better choice at high tide. The downside is company: around full and new moon more boats arrive from neighbouring villages with visitors, so the sandbank is not ours alone on those days.
We never print water hours, because they shift daily and false precision is a safety risk. Tide tables are in every room and at the beach entrance, and the butler team explains the route and the right entry point. Read more in the tides and swimming guide.

Rooms and villas
A room or a whole villa after the festival?
Both are half board, which means breakfast and dinner at Zatiny, our one restaurant with two kitchens, Indian Ocean fusion and Duyên Vietnamese, with both menus at every table. Lunch and drinks are charged, and water is free. One butler team looks after both villas.
| For | Per night, half board | |
|---|---|---|
| Asili House, double room | 2 guests | US$550 |
| Villa Kidosho, suite | 2 guests | US$675 |
| Asili House, whole | up to 8 guests | US$2,100 |
| Villa Kidosho, whole | up to 4 guests | US$1,275 |
Every night from 1 March to 14 June 2027 is low season, so these are the public rack rates for the whole post-festival window. They include VAT; the Zanzibar infrastructure tax of US$4 per person per night is extra, children too. Individual rooms take guests aged 14 and over, while a villa booked whole takes every age. Friends who go to the festival together can take Asili House whole; a couple will usually prefer a room, or Villa Kidosho. All seasons are on rooms and rates.
Closure and booking
Dates, closure and how to book
The last night you can sleep at Matlai is 14 April 2027. The hotel is closed from 15 April 2027 to 21 May 2027 and reopens on 22 May 2027. A stay after the festival is therefore a stay in the last weeks before the closure, and the same dates apply if you also want Easter in a whole villa.
Rooms are booked on the booking page, which shows live availability. Whole villas are not sold on Booking.com or other travel sites: send us your dates, the number of guests and the ages of any children by WhatsApp or through the enquiry form, and we confirm which villa is free. Free dates change every day, so we print none here. What is included in a stay is listed on services and what is included, and the boutique hotel overview shows the other ways to stay.
Good to know
Questions travellers ask
The practical questions from festival guests: dates, the drive, the number of nights, the weather in March and the price. Free dates change daily, so we point you to the live tools instead of printing them.
When is Sauti za Busara 2027?
The organiser announced Friday 19 to Sunday 21 March 2027 in Stone Town. The festival was first set for 11 to 14 March and was moved, according to the organiser, in consideration of Ramadan and the Eid celebrations. Tickets, the line-up and the venue are the organiser's to announce, so read them at busaramusic.org before you plan your evenings.
How far is Matlai from Stone Town?
Allow 1h15 by road, and up to 1h30. We say so plainly because it matters for the festival: the drive is long enough that we would not plan it straight after a late night in town. We suggest arriving the next morning.
How many nights should we stay after the festival?
2 nights is the shortest stay we take, and it gives you one whole day between the drive in and the drive out. Beyond that we have no recommended figure: count back from your flight home, add the 1h15 to 1h30 drive to the airport, and spend the rest on the beach. The last night you can book is 14 April 2027.
Will it be sunny after the festival?
We cannot promise it. March is where the wetter season starts: at the Zanzibar weather station it averages 177 mm of rain on 11 days, against 51 mm in February, and no March in 30 years was dry. Showers tend to arrive in a burst and pass. What we can offer is a warm sea of about 29.4 degrees and quiet beaches in low season.
What does a room or a villa cost after the festival?
Every night from 1 March to 14 June 2027 is low season. An Asili House double room is US$550 and a Villa Kidosho suite US$675 per night; Asili House whole (up to 8 guests) is US$2,100 and Villa Kidosho whole (up to 4) US$1,275. These are public rack rates for a night on half board, VAT included; the Zanzibar infrastructure tax of US$4 per person per night is extra.
Is the hotel open all of April?
No. The last night you can book is 14 April 2027. The hotel is closed from 15 April 2027 to 21 May 2027 and reopens on 22 May 2027. A stay after the festival therefore has to end by 14 April 2027.
Can children stay after the festival?
Individual rooms are for guests aged 14 and over. A villa booked whole welcomes every age, with Asili House for up to 8 and Villa Kidosho for up to 4. Whole villas are booked by enquiry or WhatsApp, not on the online room search.
Can you arrange the car from Stone Town?
Yes, we help to organise it. The hotel does not run its own taxis, which Tanzanian law does not allow; we work with two local partner agencies, and the butler team or our email address info@hotelmatlai.com is where to ask. Send the date, the pick-up address and the number of guests. We do not print a Stone Town fare here.
