Things to Do in Michamvi Pingwe
Quick answer
What is there to do in Michamvi Pingwe?
In Michamvi Pingwe the tide sets the plan: at low tide you walk out and swim across the channel to the Mchanga sandbank, at high tide you take the hotel's two free kayaks out, at sunset you sail a ngalawa round to Michamvi Kae, and on a morning trip you snorkel Blue Lagoon, 15–20 minutes south by village boat. For the whole island, see things to do in Zanzibar; for the area as a planner sees it, what to do in Michamvi.

Low tide
What can you do at low tide?
At low tide the sea goes out and the flat in front of the hotel becomes a place to walk. The neat rows you see in the shallows are seaweed farms, worked by women from the village, not washed-up weed; early morning, while they work, is a good time to walk past them, with a greeting first.

How do you walk to the Mchanga sandbank?
Walk across the exposed sand to the water's edge, then swim the short channel to the sandbank: the channel keeps its water at low tide. The current depends on the tide and the moon and is strongest around full and new moon; it does not pull out to sea, but swim with care. Your butler explains the route and the best place to go in, and there are tide tables in every room and at the beach entrance. If you cannot swim or would rather not, ask for a boat. The tides guide explains the timing.
Is the sandbank private?
No. Mchanga is a well-known public sandbank, and boats from neighbouring villages bring visitors there too, more of them around full and new moon. Its advantage for our guests is that it lies directly in front of the hotel. Sometimes you have it to yourselves; often you do not.
High tide
What can you do at high tide?
Around high tide the sea comes back up to the sand, and the two to four hours around it are the swimming hours, right off the beach. The hotel has two kayaks and two bicycles for all guests, free to use; at high tide the kayaks are the easy way out to the sandbank, and at full high tide you can snorkel off its edge. Your butler lends snorkelling gear and reef shoes at no charge.
When the water is out, the pools take over: each villa has its own pool. Bustani Spa, in the garden behind the villas, is open every day from 09:00 to 18:00; walk in or book through your butler, and pay the spa directly. If you ask the butler in advance, a local teacher can come to the hotel for yoga, and your butler can arrange a ride along the beach with Royal Stable Zanzibar.
On the water
Which boat trips leave from the village?
The boats belong to captains from Michamvi, and your butler finds the right one; you pay the captain in cash, because the village boats take no cards. The ngalawa sunset sail goes round the tip of the peninsula to Michamvi Kae for the sunset over Chwaka Bay, with a taxi back. The Blue Lagoon and Starfish Beach trip heads 15–20 minutes south to the reef, then back north past the hotel to the starfish on the sandy seabed. The captain sets the time of both on the day, by the tide and the sea.
Deep-sea fishing is run by Beach Bums Fishing Charters, an operator based on the hotel's beach; you book and pay them directly, or the hotel puts you in touch. The bigger fish (tuna, marlin) run mostly from October to March. Half-board and full-board guests can have their catch cooked by the kitchen at no extra charge.

After dark
What is there to do in the evening?
Evenings here are slow by design. Dinner can be set up at a table on the sand at the beach entrance, with palm leaves, bougainvillea and kerosene lamps, if you tell the butler in the morning; the menus are those of Zatiny's two kitchens. The open-air cinema has around 300 films, and a Netflix title can be downloaded on request; it is charged extra and pairs well with that dinner.
For a drink at sundown, Kae Funk on the Michamvi Kae side looks west over Chwaka Bay: a short taxi ride, then a walk over a wooden bridge through the mangroves, and an entrance fee at the door. The village itself has no nightlife. If you want bars and music, Paje, a short drive south, has them.
Diving and kite
Can you dive or kitesurf from Michamvi?
Not from the hotel itself, and we say so plainly: Matlai has no dive centre and does not teach kitesurfing. For diving, your butler calls Rising Sun Dive Centre, which sends a car to collect you; for a first try, introduction dives are offered at Blue Lagoon. Mnemba Atoll, the island's best-known dive site, is about an hour away by speedboat and a full morning's commitment. Our snorkelling and diving guide covers the reefs.
Kitesurfers go to Paje, the kite beach a short drive south, where the schools are; the hotel can refer you, and your butler helps you arrange the driver. The kitesurfing guide explains the wind seasons.
Further afield
Which day trips are worth it from here?
Fewer than you might think. Stone Town is 1h15 by car, so it works best as a night at the start or the end of the trip; see Stone Town in one day. From the hotel, a morning at Kuza Cave or Maalum, the cave pools further down the coast, fits between two tides. The day trips from the east coast guide compares them, and things to do in Zanzibar covers the rest of the island.
Good to know
Questions travellers ask
Nothing needs booking before you arrive except your room. Read the tide table with your butler on the first morning, then fix two or three things around the hours the sea gives you.
What can I do for free in Michamvi Pingwe?
The beach, the pool of your villa, the hotel's two kayaks and two bicycles, snorkelling gear and reef shoes lent by the butler, and the walk and swim to the Mchanga sandbank at low tide all cost nothing. The tide does the rest: high water for swimming and paddling, low water for the walk past the seaweed farms.
What does a ngalawa sunset sail involve?
A ngalawa is the village fishermen's wooden outrigger canoe. A captain from the village sails you from the hotel beach round the tip of the peninsula to Michamvi Kae, the west-facing side, where you watch the sun go down over Chwaka Bay, and a taxi brings you back. It costs USD 80 for two, paid in cash to the captain; departure is usually in the late afternoon, and the captain confirms the time by the tide.
Where is the best snorkelling near Michamvi?
Blue Lagoon, 15–20 minutes south by village boat, has the nearest good reef. Starfish Beach, 10–15 minutes north, is a shallow sandy seabed with large starfish. The two are usually combined in one trip of about 2 to 2.5 hours, USD 70 for two. At full high tide you can also snorkel off the Mchanga sandbank.
Can I dive or kitesurf from the hotel?
Not with the hotel itself: Matlai has no dive centre and does not teach kitesurfing. Your butler calls Rising Sun Dive Centre, which collects guests by car; introduction dives are also offered at Blue Lagoon. Kitesurfers go to the schools at Paje, a short drive south. See our kitesurfing guide.
What is there to do in Michamvi in the evening?
A private dinner at the beach entrance with lanterns, the open-air cinema (an extra charge; around 300 films, or a Netflix title downloaded on request), a sundowner at Kae Funk on the Michamvi Kae side, or nothing at all. The village has no nightlife; the bars are in Paje.
Which day trips from Michamvi are worth it?
Stone Town is 1h15 away by car, so we suggest a night there at the start or end of the trip rather than a day out. From here, a morning at Kuza Cave or Maalum, the cave pools further down the coast, works well. Our day-trips guide compares them.
How does booking and cancellation work?
A 25% non-refundable deposit secures the booking, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. If you cancel with less than one month’s notice, 100% of the total is charged; with less than two months’ notice, 50%. The full terms are on the booking policies page.
