Some useful information Visa application Travellers to Zanzibar require a valid visa. The costs are US$50 for most nationalities (US$100 for US citizens) for a single-entry visa, it is valid for a maximum of three months. If you want to avoid long lines at the airport, it's recommended to apply for your visa online in advance. You also get it on arrival at the Zanzibar International Airport, it has to be paid by credit card. Upon arrival it is required to fill out an "ENTRY / ARRIVAL DECLARATION FORM". Vaccination For Zanzibar a Yellow Fever vaccination is an entry requirement for all travelers arriving (including airport transit more than 6 hours) from countries where there is a risk of yellow fever transmission. Zanzibar is considered to be malaria-free, but there were some cases from November 2020. Please contact your doctor for more information. Payments The official currency in Zanzibar is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Banknotes come in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 TZS. However, if you're bringing cash, the preferred means of payment is the U.S. Dollar. Just be sure to bring bills that are no older than 2006, as older bills may not be accepted. On the east coast, there are no banks, but there are ATMs in the neighborhoud in front of Karafuu Hotel and some more in Paje. It's worth noting that all ATMs in Zanzibar only dispense Tanzanian Shillings. You can also withdraw money at the airport or in Zanzibar Town. Many shops and restaurants accept credit cards. Time Zone & Swahili time Zanzibar's time zone is East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) plus three hours. This means that during Central European Time (CET), Zanzibar is two hours ahead and during the Central European Summer Time (CEST) Zanzibar is one hour ahead. The Swahili Time is different from all other parts in the world. The reference points are sunrise and sunset. Most Swahili speakers live close to the equator, where sunrise and sunset are at the same time all year long between 6 & 7 am and 6 & 7 pm. The rising sun is the beginning of the day, therefore 7 am is 1 o’clock in Swahili time. Online Visa Visa & Entry Form Currency converter Click to open the calendar

Expertise. Passion. It's the heart that gives, the fingers only give away. (from Africa) Hotel Matlai is personally managed by the owner, Inge Becker-Boost and her son Tim Hennig. Tim Hennig is a certified hotel expert and has a university degree in tourism and event management. The other members of our team are chosen and trained carefully not only for professional competence but also in accordance with our team philosophy. In the Kiswahili language of Zanzibar Matlai means the first wind in the early morning that blows into the sails. For the Zanzibari, especially the fisherman, this is a very special moment. Our philosophy is to give our guests many special moments every day for a perfect dream of holidays. At the same time it is very important for us to protect the beauty and uniqueness of this wonderful place and to meet the Zanzibari people in mutual respect and acceptance. Both construction and furnishings as well as the care of our guests are guided by individualism and careful attention to any detail. As a family business is our greatest concern to pamper our guests within a warm and friendly atmosphere and to make their stay in our hotel an unforgettable vacation of their dreams. History In January 2008, during a trip to Cameroon and the ZAR to visit low land gorillas and forest elephants, the idea was born to get involved into some tourist business in Africa. The first idea of Inge was to take over and run a former hunting lodge deep within the rain forest in the ZAR about 600 km away from civilisation. However, the rest of the family was not too enthusiastic about working in such a remote location. Tim’s dream, who had then nearly finished his university studies in tourism, was to run a small hotel at the seashore. Doing business in Cameroon proved to be too complicated, so Inge undertook an internet research for „a plot in Africa“. Answer came from an estate agent in Dar es Salaam, who suggested to "just come and see". At that time, our daughter worked for the GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) in Dar Es Salaam, but otherwise we had no connections whatsoever with this part of Africa. Inge flew to Tanzania and looked at some objects. Later, she and her husband came again looking more closely into the matter. In 2010 a „shamba“ (plot) on the east coast was acquired, only populated by coconut trees. It took about a year for Inge for planning and getting all necessary permissions, and a further year for the construction itself, finished with Tim's active support. In May 2012 the hotel with the first building „Asili House“ was opened with still improvisation necessary. In 2015 the second house „Villa Kidosho“ opened. Over the years, much effort has been put into the surrounding and the cultivation of the garden, transforming it from a shamba into a lush tropical garden unique in the area. How it all began ...

SUP & Kayak Extra Services Matlai Travel Book and more Stone Town About Stone Town In Swahili the name of Stone Town is „Mji Mkongwe". Previously it was the capital of the Sultanate of Zanzibar. The first buildings of Stone Town were constructed around 1830, at the site of a former fishing village. 1840, the Sultan of Oman moved his residence to Zanzibar. For his large family and considerable harem several palaces and houses were built of coral stone. In the renewal years European, Persian, and Arabic influences defined the original and interesting architecture of Stone Town. Today the town consists of many narrow streets, where one can get lost very easily walking through the small shops and boutiques. But never fear, due to the special location of the town you meet sooner or later the "main street ", that surrounds Stone Town in a semicircle. Very interesting is a visit to the market where there is always a bustling place and where local spices such as vanilla and cloves, can be bought as a nice gift. What to see 1. Beit al-Ajaib, also known as "Palace of Wonders ", the former residence of the Sultan, built in the 1880th, first building in Zanzibar with electricity, also the first building in East Africa with a lift - under renovation. 2. Ngome Kongwe and the Old Fort, opposite the Palace of Wonders was built in the 17th Century, in the interior of the fort is an annual music festival, called "Sauti za Busara", it is absolutely recommended. 3. The Persian baths Hamamni, built in the 19th Century for Sultan Bin Said Barghash. 4. The Anglican Church, built for the Bishop of Zanzibar, in the past the location of the largest slave market in Zanzibar, former slave chambers and a memorial next to the church remember this infamous part of history. 5. The house of David Livingstone, from here David Livingstone left to his last expedition to Tanzania. 6. The museum of Freddy Mercury (1946 born as Farrokh Bulsara) and the house of the notorious slave trader Tippu Tip, who practiced human trafficking until 1907, although already prohibited. Jozani Forest Jozani Forest lies about 35 km South-East of Zanzibar Town. Since 1960 it is officially declared a forest reserve. Together with the Chwaka Bay Forest, which has been added in 1984 as a protection zone, the total of the conservation area is 2512 ha. It is known as Jozani Chwaka Bay Conservation Area (JCBCA) The area consists of evergreen bushland, thicket, different forest types and mangrove area. One of the most famous residents of the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the Red Colobus Monkey. Found only on the main island of Zanzibar, the Red Colobus is recognized as a separate species and is said to be endemic here. A visit to Zanzibar is not complete without seeing one of the rarest monkeys in Africa, with less than 2000 remaining in the world. More information Also found are the Blue Velvet Monkeys and the Ader's Duiker. It is said leopards, small in shape, live in Jozani Forest, though it is unlikely that you will see them. With a population of over 40 species of birds you cannot find a better bird watching place in the island. The Jozani Forest area also hosts a breeding station for Sea Turtles and there also live specimens of Leopard Turtoises as well as Giant Turtoises, the same species that are living on Prison Island. The small sea turtles are saved from perishing at the seashore, and they are nursed in the centre until they are big enough to be released back into the sea. Visitors will be informed by the park rangers and they are also allowed to feed the animals. The trip can be also combined with a visit of the Butterfly center. Spice Tour By cultivation and export of the coveted and expensive spices, the island was once rich. Today, the spice trade does not matter too much anymore, but in the central parts of the island, there are still many spice farms. Be invited to take a walk, where you can see, smell, feel and some also taste up to 50 different fruits, spices and plants, depending on the season. Your guide will pick leaves, twigs and fruits off the bushes and trees and you will be amazed at how the spices that you have previously known only from the spice rack at home, look in nature. You also have the opportunity to buy all kinds of spices - a little piece of Zanzibar for your home. Water Sports Snorkelling & Diving The warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean is home to about 2,000 species of fish. Almost the entire east coast of Zanzibar is preceded by a still largely intact coral reef, ideal conditions for getting to know the fantastic underwater world of the island. Particularly beautiful corals are found in front of the small private island of Mnemba. Behind the sandbank in front of our hotel you find a small, but beautiful snorkeling area. Snorkeling and diving excursions can be arranged by us; PADI Diving is offered from an adjacent diving school. Kite Surfing & Jet Ski In Paje & Jambiani, around 20-30 minutes by car are several water sport centers. Beginners and advanced courses are offered there as well as the rental of the entire equipment. Appointments can be arranged by us. Fishing If you want to catch the fish for the dinner yourself, you can try it under the guidance of a local fisherman. Take a typical fishing boat on the sea and learn how to catch with fishing line and hook kingfish, tuna and barracuda. If you are interested, we can organize such a tour for you. Behind the sandbank in front of our hotel you find a perfect location to catch octopus. Our fisherman Moses likes to go out with you to show where the Octopus is hiding and how to catch it.
